Wheelset Upgrade 650B

Hi Guy's

Please assist, I'm looking to upgrade my current wheels.

Alex Rims MD19

Shimano HB-RM35 hubs

Looking for a lightweight XC orientated wheelset. Something that will give me better speed and just improve my overall ride.

With that being said what are my options?

I've shortlisted the Mavic crossride that weigh about 1800 grams and those at Rapide. Both are like at a 5k value so that's the type of budget I'm looking at.

What else is worth while?

I haven't done tubeless yet as I figured I want to get new wheels.

Bike is a BMC weighing in at about 12kgs, want to put it on diet slowly but surely this year. Lol

Save your money and buy AC Wide Lightnings when you either have about R8k or next time someone has them on special (or even when someone has them secondhand).  Those Alexrims are not as bad as you think and I don't think going to something that weighs 1.8kg is going to be a super improvement.  My 2 cents.

You need ro spend a bit more than R5k to notice a difference. There are regular specials on Hope hubs with Crest/Arch/Flow rims in the R7k to R9k bracket. These are lighter stiffer and have faster freehub engagement than your current wheels. Going tubeless will also give a decent improvement in weight and ride feel

Just clarify - 15mm or QR front axle? From that pic it looks like QR...

Everything does not have to be majorly expensive.

Rapide can do bladed spokes on their sealed hubs with 27mm wide rims for a good price.  They are pretty light, and lekker stiff - and the hub quality is really good.

Alternatively, get hubs from either Rapide or Darkhorse, spokes from Rapide, and order a set of decent lightweight rims from CRC (like the wide lightnings or WTB assyms) - and get your favourite wheelbuilder to lace them up.

I would to one of the excellent bike shops near you in Centurion. I would then ask them for some Hope Pro 4's and ZTR Arch ex wheels. Decent spokes (read non bladed cos thats crap) and brass nipples.

Hand built wheels last a lifetime.
