All the best to Matt....I'm new to the whole triathlon scene, but he is definitely a name that kept coming up...and for good reason, top class athlete. Heal up well and see you soon at the races again.

The crazy thing is that is a long straight road. How do you still hit someone from behind if you could see him for at least 1km ahead.

You are an old woman that should not be driving.

Thanks everyone for all the well wishes and support, it's been much appreciated. The full update is that I got hit pretty hard from behind by a car whilst cycling to Franschhoek, I was on the far left hand side of the road and witnesses of the accident think the old lady had moved into the emergency lane at the time to let another car past, she can't remember what happened herself. I hit my back on the bonnet and then did a few backflips before hitting the deck. Ambulance was luckily very quickly on the scene and I got taken to Stellenbosch Mediclinic. The main damage was a compression fracture of my L1 vertebra with severed ligaments in the area. To stabilize the spine they put four metal rods either side of the L1 effectively fusing the three vertebra together. Am up sitting and walking very slowly at the moment and have another four days of recovery in hospital. Thanks to all the medical personnel involved for the very efficient and professional job so far.

I agree 100%

If my granny had to take her license test today, no ways that she would pass it. She is not capable of driving, yet is legally allowed too.

Old people driving and fat people not paying for extra weight on planes. Two very logical questions that are apparently too taboo to discuss.

I am sorry, if you cannot answer the simple question of how you hit someone, your license should be gone.

Fatties on planes are the worst, when you engulf my arm and jiggle around me, you should buy two seats.

Oh I agree ..

We took my mom's car from her and gave it away..yes I know it was mean but that is okay I would rather be mean than have her hurt herself or anyone else.

Glad you are still alive. Sounds like the granny was focusing on the car trying to overtake and probably right on her tail and not on what was right in front of her.

My mom and I did the exact same thing with my dad... We sold his car a few years ago. Just before I was driving with him and he went straight through a red light. I asked him if he realised it... And he said "what light"

There is a third issue as well (in general, I have no details of this accident). Aggressive drivers coming up from behind and attaching themselves to your car's bumper as a forceful request to move over. A very inexperienced or very old driver may panic and pull over even if it's not safe.

All the best Matt, we hope and pray for a quick recovery.

I fear that somehow someone will spin this into a situation where Matt is to blame. Not enough reflective clothing or blinking lights or a parade of cars with warning signs and an airhorn to warn drivers that there is a cyclist on the road.... GRRRRRRR   gets my blood boiling just thinking about it.

Strongly leaning towards doing all my training on the MTB going forward and just doing the Full Road Closure road races on the road. Simply not worth the risk.

Kelvin Trautman Photographer:

"Last week he was running 3 min/km. We talked of his chances at winning the upcoming South African half Ironman event this weekend over the phone. Then a car hit him whilst cycling and Matt broke his back. Surgeons put two steel rods through his crushed vertebrae on Sunday and today he did a 25m lap of ward D in hospital.

It's crushing to see him so fragile. Matt has an indomitable spirit and unwavering focus and, as a pro ironman athlete, a seemingly indomitable body. Wrong. I watched him today groaning as he strained to simply put one foot in front of the other. It’s crushing, and yet I have this overwhelming sense of relief - I, like so many others that have been in touch over the last week feel so damn lucky to be watching him just move his toes, let alone walk like an old man.

The future is uncertain, filled with many what if’s and immense frustration at the thought of not being able to fulfil potential but his indomitable spirit and focus, the nuts and bolts that make him who he is, fills me with warm fuzzies, because I know whatever matty moo sets his sights on is never far out of reach.
Thanks so much to everyone who has been in touch with messages of support for Matt. It truly is heart melting stuff and has helped all in involved more than you will know."
