Going from 3x9 to 1x11?

I currently have a 3x9 Shimano Deore/Alivio/Octalink drivetrain/groupset(?), and I'd like to go 1x11:

a) free up space for the dropper post lever

b) simpler gear changes

c) better drivetrain/groupset

What should I be looking to get?

a) ~34T narrow-wide (oval?) chainring

b) 11 speed cassette & 11 speed shifter & new rear mech (with clutch?)

c) 11 speed chain (not sure how it differs from a 9/10 speed?)

Is it worth getting a new BB and crank arms? Anything else to consider?

How does the 11 speed cassette fit into the same space as the current 9 speed, and do I need to worry about chainline?

In some ways it feels like an overkill for a R9k hardtail, but a new 1x11 bike is going to cost a lot more than this upgrade, although it will most likely be dual-sus (not there yet).

Is something like this a good deal / product?

How much should I be budgeting for the exercise?

Yes, that is about the most cost effective way to go 1 x 11, and also with one of the most robust groupsets around.

Only other thing you might need to change is your crankset (what are you using at present, maybe it can take a NW chainring)

And then you will need the NW chainring also, get that from Rapide too.

What wheelset do you have? Most will accept the 11spd cassette, the width is about the same due to the narrower gaps between the cogs.

On my older Shimano wheel I can swop between 9/10/11 no problem.

Just make sure your freebody can take an 11 speed cassette. Not sure if its shimano or sram thats fussy.

Neither.

If he's on 9 speed at the moment, it means it's a shimano freehub which can take 11 speed cassettes from Shimano & Praxis & Sunrace, as well as the NX SRAM Cassette.

It's the SRAM Eagle & 11 speed cassettes that you need to worry about.

I can buy from CRC, have a friend coming back to SA in Feb.

Yes, that's a good bundle.

If you're buying from CRC, DO NOT ship it to the UK & get your mate to bring it over. You'll pay UK Vat @ 20% vs local at 14% and then you have to wait for it, and if caught he'll face a hefty fine AND have to pay local VAT on arrival.

This looks to be a good offer.

With your current freebody, you can run cassettes with the smallest sprocket being an 11t.

You can also use your current crank and mount the chainring in the middle ring position, but you need to make sure of the BCD of both the relevant crank position and the chainring you want to buy.

As in on the older sram freebodies?

No, as in everything up till SRAM's 11 speed was essentially a "shimano freebody" unless it was Campy.

Doesn't matter who manufactured it, it was all one standard. 8/9/10/11 all interchangeable unless you buy a SRAM XD cassette, which needs an XD freehub body.

Frikadel. Do you know how long I've been looking for a straight answer to this.

NW chainring - yes

Size of chainring a little dependent on terrain and wheel size because you will lose 2 or 3 of your current easiest gears with the conversion

11 speed upgrade kit consisting of chain, cassette, RD and shifter will give you best value for money.

Your 9 or 10speed chain is too wide for the 11 spd cassette so you must get 11 spd chain. It is normally part of an upgrade kit.

Freehub body. Your 9spd freebody should be ok. Presume we are talking normal splined Shimano type?

You might even need a thin spacer under the cassette. Just make sure that the lockring engages more than just one or two turns of thread.

Chainline - 11 speed Shimano places the biggest cog a little inboard compared to 9 and 10 speed. You need to line up your chainring with #5 or #6 cassette cog (from small) and you might need spacers or different length chainring bolts for this.

Check that the BCD of your current cranks will match to the bcd of the chainring you buy. Get a 10 speed NW chainring if you can't find a 11 speed that fits. 9,10 and 11 spd chains all have the same internal width so you can use the 11spd chain on a 10 spd chainring.

You might have issues finding a NW chainring to fit your older cranks in which case you may as well upgrade to newer crankset. Any 10spd or 11 spd crankset will give you a workable solution. If you change the crankset you will need a new BB too.

At this point you should consider if the level of investment is justified.
