With all the Bicycle infrastructure been built in the Western Cape (some good and some Bad) along with the by law that motorist need to pass at 1 m. Maybe PPA should canvas local government to make it compulsory that if not High school student at least University students need to commute by bike more often than by car.

Please remember in traffic car drive often slower than bike and as a cyclist I know it is safer for me to be moving faster than cars than the other way round - At least I know what I may or may not hit and can take action.

Nope there has been the odd attempted kidnapping in Pretoria and boys are not any safer.  Being a father of two daughters, letting my girls going to school alone was simply not on the cards.

I like the caravan park ideology here - we may have electric fences at home and alarms system - but when we go camping it then OK to have less security - probably because we all in the same situation. If all learner past a certain age have to use bicycles to commute it becomes safer for all - maybe dad / mom will ride with them to school and then onto work!

Maybe one day they will fill up again, would be nice.

Ja.. very..there are a few kids that cycle to school that live in the residential area closer to school. but unlike in the cities, here we can choose which school our kids go to, so for our kids it is a bit far to carry all the bags (+-20km).. suppose they could but he route is a little bit dodge.

The other high school has a lot of kids cycling to school as it is in the center of a residential area, and they have a huge xco team, those kids all basically cycle to school.. which is great.[emoji106]

Edit... a cycle route would be about 15km

You have a lot more faith in the standard SA road user than I do.  A few years ago I was standing in the front of our garden when a couple came walking by with their 3-4 year old on his new bicycle.  It is in a residential area with basically no pedestrian walkway.  Along comes this vehicle hooting and screaming at the kids that was too close to the road, not reducing speed, not passing wide.  To top it all, the driver was a women.  One tend to think that women would be more carefull where children are involved.  This little kids suffered the same abuse and aggresion you and I have to deal with.

That is truly awful.

Do you go camping in Pretoria?   :whistling:

I did cycle with my youngest to school when she was still in the Creche.  But once they went to primary school it was 4 km of road where I myself do not want to venture with car, nevermind a bicycle.

In Germany where we stay I still have a problem getting used to allowing my children to go out on their own.  In December my one daugther having her birthday party when two of the friends needed to go home after the party (in December it is pitch dark at 17H00 already) decided to walk home. Two 10 year old walking home on their own.  I walked about 200 m behind them without them knowing I am following them.  Just had to make sure they get home safe.

reminds of the realization of how '"normally paranoid" i really was after living in euroland and then coming back to ZA. All that laissez faire attitudes cultured in europe had to be banished upon landing back in the homeland.

Nope, but I am riding up to Plett with the UCT cycling club next week and we camping all the way! Our expensive bike will be left out at night, car keys left somewhere along with the cash we maybe caring. If anything is lost or stolen apart from human life - it's replaceable.

Hear you.  My point is is our houses are in cities with 1 000 000 + inhabitants.  If 1% are theives that 10 000 to walk around and steal from you.  The moment you are out of the city the population drops radically.  That is why you are safer and one can take the "chance".

I actually like this idea of getting kids on bikes to school, it will also mean there will be fewer SUV moms driving like maniacs

But on a serious note..there will I'm general be less traffic on the school routes.

I think it will be a slow process. There needs to be a constant reminder with some emotive advertising around the trauma suffered by both a cyclist and their family if an accident happens.

My family has just gone through just such a trauma - not cycling related - and the ramifications are ongoing and will continue for years. It has changed my outlook on life and the risks attached to any of the activities that we do. Its one thing to take risks where you are solely responsible for the outcome, but where you have to rely on other people behaving reasonably the risk goes through the roof. I'd rather go ride big gap jumps than ride on the road regularly as an example.

There is a general disregard for safety and human life in this country that is palpable. Be it the government medical service failing mentally ill patients or reckless drivers and poor law enforcement.

Flippen women in general

I have been training out on the road now for what almost 3 months and almost all of the close calls have been women drivers. They just don't flippen pay attention or are aware that other people use the road.. shees man.

The worst one was a young poppie putting on her makeup while turning..she went so wide she was in the oncoming traffic lane..wtf man..

Do the schools in the cities still have bus services?

To some extend there was something.  It was more in the line of the municiple bus schedule was in line with school times on certain routes.

She needs to contemplate public transport

And on that note.. if we had better reliable public transport that would also help.
