I was sitting in a pretty decent position for a podium, then lost 3 places on the 4th lap, 5th lap I just had to consolidate but a hell of an improvement from the first event. I also did myself no favors by missing the call up into the start chute. I had to line up right at the back & that cost me dereley on that 1st lap.

The Juniors field was stacked with talent, with 4 Europeans, 3 Swiss. My son said most of the riders starting in the rear had to walk the first singletrack on the first lap.

My son did not have a good race, saying he felt flat on the 2nd and 3rd lap, and he also somehow lost his gell. When he felt for it in his pocket, it was gone. He lost it once on a sandy corner as you come down to the tech zone, and he said his front wheel was washing out a lot on the corners. But he finished, albeit at the rear of the field. He looked disappointed with his effort. I just told him to get over it and look forward, as some other dudes had a much worse race than him, so sht happens.

Yeah, as said, some basic turning and cornering became challenging due to the sand badly rutted areas.

Many kids out there today - awesome to see. Each one in their own right deserving of big kudos for their effort, it was tough as nails out there.

eish sorry to hear. Just tell him the next one will go better & that he must just remember this was a SA CUP round, as well & all the Euros coming to collect UCI points at these events. Next round they won't be here & things will go better for him.

Yes, but there is still something wrong with his race prep. His last lap was 2 minutes faster than his 3rd lap, and 1 minute faster than his first and second lap. He was lapped just short of starting his 5th lap.

I need to figure out why he felt flat on the 2nd and 3rd lap, while he said he really felt good on the 4th lap and felt much more stronger only then. That alone probably cost him about 4 minutes over the whole race.

Maybe he is not warming up properly?

I am also like that, it takes me a while to get going, a good warm up has always been very important to get my legs going.

Ryan Kellerman. A bit more than a year ago I helped him with his technical skills. He used to take all the B-lines. Now he is showing me lines through rock gardens. I'm very proud of this laaitie.

1st lap pretty much sets you up for the rest of the race, its where you can win it all or lose it all. It is virtually balls to the wall & if you didnt train to start that fast then you will pay for it. Its sounds like he blew on those laps then managed to recover on the 4th, other factors that could've contributed to a faster time, was by the 4th lap the field is evenly spread & he had clear lines on the entire route vs the other laps everyone is still together?

Ryan is team mate of my son at PV.  Yes, he did improve a whole lot. I know my son used to tell me how Ryan struggled, especially with the rock garden at Helderberg where they train.

I have been preaching about warm-up to my son many times. Maybe he must hear it from someone else but his dad. He warms up, but I think not hard enough to sort the lactic acid out.

Well timed pic that last one

Great angle [emoji1491]

Thanks. Not bad for a phone shot. I would have loved it to be sharper but I was too lazy too schlep my big camera with so I shouldn't moan.

Saw your guys, but when they finished I was prepping my son for his start., and the subsequent trek to the tech zone a mile away. Would have loved to have a chat with them.
