Try to get one where the back piece doesn't run down your spine. The older leatt's are like that. The newer ones have a split back piece. There is some thought that the bit running down the spine could cause spinal injury. They are also known to break collar bones and also could potentially cause sternum and larynx injuries. Crush your larynx you die.

They are not the silver bullet that will protect you from any and every neck/back injury. It's a matter of what risk you are prepared to take and if the perceived protection is worth the other risks IMO. Just know what you are getting yourself into.

Buying second hand is fine as long as it's not cracked. Peel the padding back to see if it's cracked. They are actually made too durable.

Disclaimer* I'm not a fan of neck braces. I think a lot of the "science" around them is emotive marketing BS and I'm yet to see any scientific evidence of them working.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check for a newer one then, is atlas a good brand for neckbraces?

For me I'd say it's the best one.

It wasn't the first to market so it's learnt from the others "mistakes"

It sits in a way that doesn't interfere with your collar bones. I know proper fitment of a leatt stops this

the back piece sits on your shoulder blades and not your spine

The chest goodies sit high so they don't rest on your sternum

If I was forced to wear a neck brace that's the one I would choose.

I am personally very thankful that I had a neck brace on when I crashed my mx bike. Fell really awkwardly and the doctor reckons without it I would have broken my neck. Instead i just had extensive bruising. I am a firm believer in dress for the fall not the ride.

Leatt Neck Braces don't break collarbones, when set up correctly it doesn't touch your collarbone, chances are the guys with broken collarbones didn't take the 5 mins to RTFM and set it up.

I was one of the first guys to buy one of the first models of Leatt when they came out thinking it was a good idea. A few years later I got cross rutted on the face of a jump and kicked over bars off the side of a large table top and pretty much lawn darted head first into the ground. Couldn't turn my neck for few weeks but no fractures and no other issues(no broken collarbone either funnily enough). I owe my current mobility to the brace, the doctors were very surprised when the accident was described to them and now even riding the mx bike around the block after washing it I wear helmet and neck brace.

For safety gear always buy new, you wouldn't buy a 2nd hand comdom for protection...

And in my opinion go with the whole local is lekker vibe, read up on Dr Leatt and why he made the brace.

For xc mtb it is not needed, but for downhill and MX/Enduro it should be compulsory.

Are neck braces a race requirement?

No. And IMO they SHOULD NOT be mandated. Until there is actual scientific evidence that they work. A Bike crash is such a random event that proving that the existence of a neck brace is the cause of you not being in a chair is almost impossible.

Nope. I tried one and I didn't like it at all. Felt as if it affected my mobility properly, and I found myself going slower and more awkwardly with it on.

You need a neck for a neck brace to work. Hehe.

Skollie - remember, this is coming from Omega Man. As in the dude who used to be behind the Omega neck brace (correct me if I'm wrong, D)
