Yes truck driver is wrong, BUT that group is broken up, why are the riders riding on the line when there is more than enough space.

Those okes are being pretty douchy

Why always blame the cyclists? It was a race, with riders trying to get to front overtaking etc.

The bottom line here is the truck should not have overtaken, he could see there is a cycle race in progress and he endangerd  HIS ligfe and everyone elses. How the cyclist were riding does not have anything to do with HIS stupid action.

Genuinely can't see the problem here except that the cyclists are not making an effort to keep left.

I agree! The only problem i see is that this isn't a closed road race and you are cycling as close to the middle white line as you can... You are as much to blame as the truck driver is.

You can not see that he nearly went into the truck from the front? That the truck from the front stopped in yellow lane?

PPA race rules say Keep left of the middle of the road.

IT is a RACE.....we as a group were not doing anything illegal BUT the truck did!

Excuse my MTB ignorance as well, but surely this far 'back' with the space you can see on the video, the riders could just try and stay a bit further left?

Surely there is no reason for #670 to ride that far to the right?

Yes, I know I'll get flamed! No, I'm not making excuses for the idiotic driver!

The riders were overtaking each other to get into better possition.

Everyone was doing the keep left pass right and you can see  that even the dude with the camera is peddaling to go forward....

Lol dude relax.

I also cycle, I also do this. It's not about always blaming the cyclist.

How the cyclists were riding has everything to do with this. Instead of having to completely going into oncoming traffic the driver could have stayed half in the normal lane and half over the line.

If you can't admit that there is some fault to the group as well then so be it. Just stating my opinion as I see things. No need to get worked up

The truck should have waited until it was safe to pass. It didn't.

Thats the point.

I disagree, that video doesn't show the whole group only the front part

99er groups are big, 80 to 100 riders, Simply no way a bunch of 80 riders are going to stick left of the yellow lane

The truck driver had a clear view of a large group of cyclists in front of him, he had no need to rush to overtake there

As cyclists we just love victim blaming dont we

Not worked up at all.  But to be honest there is no reason on this earth why the truck had to vertake there. And if we were more to the left and the truck comes past as you suggest then it is even more dangerous as they get even closer.

I think it is better to force the cars to go completely into oncomming traffic then they "should" be passsing us safely (when there is no cars from the frotn) The way you would overtake antoher car.

Go ride a road race.....

Thanx, I'll do that. But can tell you now I'll stay in the yellow lane, even if its a race. (I'm too slow to really race)

Only because I'm crap scared of trucks...

exactly - truck driver is a impatient stupid douche

in open road racing you have to hold the road with a group not get pushed onto the verge its the only safe way

I agree with you 100%, the truck should have waited and it didn't.

I'm just saying, we're always preaching that to get to safer cycling in SA we as cyclists should try and make the first move, and be considerate as well. Almost every race I have ridden in without full closure, when we hit a busy road the batch at least tries to ride more to the side. it would have taken nothing to just shift up a tiny bit, instead everybody comes to the hub and immediately it's pitchforks out for the truck driver.

Why we gotta be so shitty

Note - I'm not arguing just stating how I see things

Agree with Jurgs here, no one said it is always the fault of the cyclist, and think that most of us agreed that the truck driver could have waited a bit before making is pass attempt.

Another point, when I am on a road with my vehicle and I see it is clear on the yellow line and feel safe to do so, I might move a bit to the left for the guy behind me to pass.  It is my right to stick in the lane no matter what, but I do move to the side (yes I know it is probably not correct for me to do it). But I do it because I try and be considerate.  The same with a race, we know it is not an closed off road, we knew that when we signed up for it, so we also need to balance not just our needs but the other road users too. And when users of the (pedestrians, skateboard, cyclist, motor vehicle, etc.) road does something that endangers others, we can and should shine the light on it.  Sadly the louder you shout the less impact the shouting will have, while something thoughtful and measured will probably have a bigger impact (for example the memorial rides / ghost bikes, etc.) which my personal view is create a much bigger impact in this world.

Hmm see there has been lots of replies since I started the reply, so maybe the thread has moved in a new direction already

And why would these bunch of riders be any different from those you always ride with? Maybe don't judge unless you have the full picture?
