I must say that i have had 2 warranty claims from specialized without problems, both was for paint and clear coat issues. No excuses, just a new, better frame.

In my opinion they have a good warranty department. But in any business you dont get it right all the time so i am sure this can be sorted out.

How long did they take to replace two of your frames???

This seems to be a common problem with Specialized bikes.

Not sure if it is their seat post clamp design. They have a clamp that tightens on the oposite side to the the groove in the seatpost. This often causes the cabon to "bunch" up at the clamp groove and then "crack" at that point.

It is not due to overtighting. I had the same problem with a bike.

Intersting that Specialized also told me the same thing

"happens often, it was overtightened"

Funny that soooo many people overtighten ONLY specialized seatpost clamps an not any other bikes.

I was not going to even put my issue on this forum until so many people told me how it has happened to them or they have heard it happening very often! I dont believe a crack that reveals a similar one due to over tightening now gets assumed that it has also formed due to over tightening?

Reminds me of a similar issue with the Giant MTB frames (fatigue issues near the seat post or something)

There's been a discussion recently - 2015? ????

Exact same issue I had....they just said....you overtighten it and walked away

I think it is the clamp design, Specialized gave me "S-works " clamp and that grips differently and better.

One big difference, Giant accepted it and replaced frames.

If memory serves the first one was my mtb, it was quick, 2 weeks. The second one was my road one and that took longer, because they did not have a 61cm in SA. I waited about 3 months for that although i had confirmation after about 3 weeks.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

The thing is, if it is the bike shop's fault, and 100 people see this thread, do they really just lose 1 customer?

So no, he shouldn't shrug his shoulders and give up.

Reading various replies I checked the original post - the work was done by the local Spez shop ...

Are these independently owned ?

What clout does the franchisor have if an outlet messes up ?

And more to the point - why must a client fight an "outlet" if they messed up ?  Surely a professional outfit will sort this out and keep this one client and their wider audience happy ... by letting this slip this outlet is going to mess up again and cause lots of long term damage to the brand.

and yes - by the sounds of it this is a way too common issue ....

I have had 2 unsuccessful warranty claims with Specialized South-Africa

They did however offer to do "crash replacement" discounts on both claims

I suppose I won at the end with the one claim,as I upgraded my frame at the same time

I recall some of the very same names in this thread being envolved back then..so you are at the right place here;)

Best of luck,keep us posted

So let me get this right . .  they will replace a carbon frame because the paint is not right. .  but if it cracked it is your problem . . . #atleastitlooksgood.(runs for the hills)

You really need to crank an allen key to crack a frame, ,  otherwise its a bad design
