Disc brake problem

Hi guys and ladies

I have an issue with my disk brakes.

In the evenings, after my bike stood for a few hours, my back brake does not work and I can pull the brake lever all the way to my grips. Then after pulling it a couple of times and riding around the block it seems to be better.

Is it a simple case of air in the system?

It is avid elexir

Yes, they need a bleed. There may also be an o-ring or a seal that has failed in the system. First - bleed. Slowly and with care. They take a bit of time to bleed properly, but it's a really simple process. Get all the air out, flush the system and then seal it up again. If the problem persists, then it's a seal or o-ring failure. Spare parts will be easy to come by through your LBS.

Alternatively - take it to Droo :P

I had exactly the same problem with a set of Elixir 5's I owned. Every time I would go down a hill or use the brakes they would loose pressure. Even after a good bleed they still gave the same issues, my solution: Got me a set of XT brakes and chucked those into the old skip

Could be the bladder thingy of the piston (lever end) but they are replaceable. Can do yourself or send to agents. Bleed first though.

**NB** NOTHING wrong with Avid brakes have had Elixir 5's for years and never had an issue. Much smoother feathering on Avids. Bit of a bugger to bleed but once you know how it's simple. Avids can be serviced Shimanoes are gooi weg.

I recently rebuilt my Elixir 5's. Got the Service kits for both the calipers and brake levers from Revolution Cycles. As about R250 per kit for the levers and R250 for calipers. If you are any way technically inclined, take the levers apart (seeing they will need a bleed any way) and check the bladders and o rings in the levers (Part G) . If there is any damage to them, rebuild the levers with a new kit.

Also check your calipers. Make sure the piston move freely and that there is no brake fluid contamination on your brake pad (indicating a leak, and requiring a rebuild).

Just one thing to keep in mind. the o ring on the bleed port is a little b#tch. Mine got damaged by my lbs when they bled it and was the actual cause prompting my rebuild
