Convert road shoes to MTB?

Anyone have an idea on how to do this?

I have some extremely well fitting, stiff, and strong bont riot road shoes. I have a new pair too that will take over road duty, and want to attempt converting the old pair to mtb.

I know both sidi and shimano make a 3 - 2 hole pattern converter but I have no idea where to get these in SA.

If I can get one of those, or successfully drill through the sole instead, I'm planning to have a cobbler glue some rubber inserts onto the front, middle, and back of the shoes to aid in walking.

Anyone tried this successfully, or know where I could find the adapters?

Thanks in advance!

Just put old road pedals on your mtb. Choose your routes well not to walk some technical sections.

Done it on my hard tail and works perfectly.

Not a good idea. Friend did this to kinda "try before you buy" and the dirt in the cleat (road does not shed dirt as well as MTB cleats) caused his feet to get stuck and wham ... down he went. Sold his MTB after that.

Yeah I have tried road cleats before, and it was a nightmare. Even the small amount of putting my foot down for small walks or moving off course, the gaps in the cleats got filled with mud and stones, meaning cleaning back in was near impossible, and when I forced it, I managed to break the retaining clip of the pedal.

There are a number of converters but I can't find any in SA on the web. I have a feeling some small shop somewhere will have a while bunch that they've never sold, but still.

I am thinking about 3D printing, also maybe cutting some sheet metal for the job, but I don't have access to tooling for this.

I know a guy that did this a while ago.He glued some car tyre tread onto his road shoes and got the Sidi converter plate. He used them for a few rides and just went and bought mtb shoes.

My advice...sell or swop the Bont shoes.

Haha that's some real advice there Gummi!

I have some mtb shoes at the moment, so it's not like I'm not riding. I just find most of the mtb shoes very flexible and a Strange fit.

If it won't work though, I'll have to live with it for now:)

Rocksole in the Bo Kaap will glue on hard rubber strips that make the sole resemble a mountain bike shoe. Just take the Bont's and a mountain bike shoe in and explain to the owner what you want. He's done it before and the bonded rubber is seriously strong.

Please let me know if you find the 3 to 2 hole conversion kit anywhere.

Splat you legend! Thanks so much for that link. Will go grab me some on Monday!!

Just beware that these won't last off road. The rubber grips will come off very quickly.

Thanks for the warning!

If I can come right with the adapters, I'm planning on using old mtb Tyre tread to cover the sole of the shoes. Not planning on any hectic walking, etc, so just want to prevent deep scoring of the soles.

If it doesn't work, then I'll abandon and just get some stiffer mtb shoes or shell out for riot mtb versions! Trying to mtb on a budget at the moment!
