Broker Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 These studios re becoming very popular in various parts of the world. Just a few simple questions to evaluate the need for something similar here in good old RSA Please add some comments on what you believe such a studio should offer membership:
eccc whippet Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 zwift...would be great. a variety of tunes....connected to wireless headphones
Rocket-Boy Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 There are some around, I know of Wattworx in Durban and heard there are serious gains to be had.
Veebee Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I would rather invest in a good IDT, then use the money for a coach and suffer on your own. While you will see gains from these classes, each person is different and will have to develop and improve on specific area's so this is where the coach comes in.

bebop Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 There is a couple of them in Joburg. If you asking the question because you think there is money in opening one then I'm not too sure, as I think it's not as profitable as a gym. The initial outlay of equipment (eg. 40K for one cycleops Phantom Indoor trainer and you need at least say 10), rent, staff and so on makes for a very long investment before you will see return. Over the past years of cycling, I've been at 2 of them and it always seems like a seasonal thing as the one month the classes is all full and then all of a sudden its empty for 2 months or so. My 2 cents. Personally, I feel Powerbase training is a personal thing and should be personalised to your needs, not everyone has the same cycling goals. I got myself a good IDT and I'm suffering on my own, the same way as when you out there riding

eccc whippet Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 something else to consider... cost to setup a IDT if you own a carbon bike...i hear it is not so smart to use on a IDT...which means a second bike. then you have to buy and IDT ...a good unit is gona cost a few bob. power meter...also gona break the bank. devices to link units. a computer and maybe a screen. data useage. just a few things to consider when considering a setup at home. power base training cost around R 10000...some have specials which reduce to R800 if you sign up for the year for example...so in 2 years you could pay for your IDT. personally i try go to one power training session per year...R 1000 per year...i learn to pace myself...using the power meter and cadence and push myself to my limits. one day when i am more flush with cash...a personal trainer...a nutritionist...a few power training sessions...a power meter on my bike...a decent IDT with all the goodies to link ...a fibre optic line with unlimited high speed data a dedicated room for for training with A/C huge screen and sound system connected to zwift and i am good to go around R 50 000 should get a decent setup.

Here in Jhb, Northcliff Cycles has a watt bike studio at the shop.........
Chris_ Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 if you own a carbon bike...i hear it is not so smart to use on a IDT...which means a second bike. Why's this?
Chris_ Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Cyclezone in Rosebank has a good setup. Drawcard for me was that you can use your own bike.
Veebee Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 I have been swopping around both my carbon bikes on the IDT with no issues since November 2015. You can pick up a smart IDT for R10k. Just use your phone or laptop to connect.Zwift R150 a month, Trainerroad is about the same but doesn't use data like Zwift. One month of cadence a year would be a waste of money IMO. Having the IDT means you can do it year round, in the comfort of your own home at your own time. You don't have to worry about driving to these classes. If you have to pay money to be motivated to ride your bike then something is not right...
Forbsie Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Try this? "Crank It" in Bedfordview (at Italian Club)... new Technology, new bikes, really good

eccc whippet Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Why's this?google using a carbon bike on a trainer...some say it is bad...some say it is an urban myth...some say it might affect warranties...some say it is all bullshyt and there is no problem...as veebee indicated he hasnt had an issue...its your call.
shaper Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Also been using both my carbon road and TT bike on the IDT without issue for the last 2 years
