Claiming on failed Shimano component

Just asking for opinions on this. Bought a new bike about 6 months ago and this weekend was riding along a single track when my XTR derailleur jammed, I had the clutch 'on'. The chain broke and the derailleur is a write off. I've never actually claimed on any component before but I phoned my LBS this morning where I was told that there was pretty much no way that Shimano would replace it. It wasn't a crash, I has 2 witnesses riding with me, and I had just cleaned the chain and re-lubed before the ride. Just wondering about other hubbers experiences?

w.I had my new bike a month, the shifter jammed, I actually tried to repair it myself cos I had a race the next day and couldn't fix it. Missed the race, took it to lbs, they sent it off to Sram, 2 days later I got a new shifter and a complimentary bike wash, no questions asked

There would be no way of figuring out what caused the failure.... It could have been 'poor maintenance' or 'rider error'... Groupset components are basically seen as consumables - your RD was just consumed a little faster than normal...

My brand new DA 9100 fell off during its maiden ride. Everything just fell off next to the road and then a truck ran over it. I've got two witnesses confirming. I'm claiming a new groupset.

Any help would be appreciated...

I guess you're right but I'm fastidious about looking after my bikes. I suspect that the clutch system jammed, just such a bloody expensive derailleur!

SRAM is not the same as Shimano and they're run very differently.

TBH, I don't rate XTR very highly.  It's nice and light weight, but not durable.  I snapped my XTR RD three weeks ago in an incident that would have barely left a scratch on an XT.  Also had issues with brakes, pedals, etc.  My opinion is that you're facing an uphill battle with Cool Heat if you're trying for the warranty route.  Just get yourself an XT and move on.

Yea, I mean there's just no way to be sure, if a shifter is faulty, maybe. But as far as something that's broken goes, not really.

Just replace it with an XT. There's very little 'innovation' as the hierarchy goes up in derailleurs.

So without knowing the exact conditions as to when the rear derailleur failed and what exactly caused the jam unfortunately you are left to replace at your own cost.

There are so many variables and incidents that I have seen that I don't blame any of the manufacturers in these cases.

My personal favourite is when noob hits steep step up and starts mashing the rear shifter to drop gears in a desperate attempt to not noob stall on the hill and cause a bottleneck and in doing so either.

1. rips rear derailleur off the hanger - noob stalling on the step up anyway.

2. breaks the derailleur hanger off the bike - noob stalling on the step up anyway.

or... (my personal favourite)

3. completely twists and/or mashes and/or snaps off the carbon derailleur cage - noob stalling on the step up anyway.

all of which resulting in disbelief and blame of said bike and/or equipment for being crappy.

infortunately I think most groupset warranties are based on out the box failures or clear manufacturing flaws (with probably an arsenal of proof which would need to be provided)

2c

Just buy a new one.

Generally the claims on "moving" components are a waste of time. Shifters and Cranks are easier to tell if there is damage or failure. I destroyed the spindle of my DA 7800 crankset, Coolheat made me wait 2 months for a decision because they were arguing against the claim, I eventually got a new crankset. However I don't see this happening for a derailer.

I used to think that. but I had a 9spd 960 XTR drivetrain that I got 2nd hand on a bike. was expecting to replace it with something cheaper once it broke, took it through the wars and it never, ever skipped a beat.

True - my old 9sp XTR was a solid unit that worked faultlessly.  But the more modern equivalent hasn't stood up to the test.

Previous experiences.. Last year, on my 3rd ride with a full XTR new bike, my chain snapped pulling off at a stop street. It resulted in my crank being really badly scratched. LBS wasn't confident that Shimano would do anything, but they sent off the damaged components. Shimano replaced the chain and the crank. The chain's failure was deemed to be a factory fault. It's worth seeing if Shimano can do anything if it's a genuine fault.
