like the threaded BB - thats a change and the colour on this one looks like a pharma med lemon box or something that you need when you have a terrible cold

So the summary I have from scouting the international forums yesterday:

 

1. Head Angle is slackened to 69.5 degrees

2. Longer top tube with shorter stem

3. Single pivot design. Droping the Horst link saved something like 300gr

4. Threaded BB instead of Pressfit

5. The seatpost is 31.6 instead of 27.2

6. The Carbon models have Carbon Swing Arms

7. No more WC and Marathon versions. They are only making one frame geometry

8. Fork offset is 42mm which apparantly creates an issue with Fox Stepcast. 

9. The new bike is noticeably slimmer than the previous version. Look at the chainstays etc. I have also heard that the top tube has been trimmed and can not take the multitool in the frame as with the previous version.

10. They have redesigned and repositioned the brain.

 

That red and gold one is the bike of Simon Andreasson for this weekends world cup...

not sure about 42mm short offset  = increases the trail. You need longer offset to tighten the trail. This helps to improve steering and agility at low speeds.....like tight switchbacks ....

This was leaked on the specialized website late on Tuesday...

 

"Let’s be honest with each other—XC riding and racing has changed. Gone are the race courses that resembled walking paths through the park. In are sections of trail that could be mistaken for an enduro track. We knew we had to address the sharp, often intimidating ride characteristics of XC bikes, so everything was thrown out the window and we started from scratch.

 

We increased the reach to make for a longer, more stable front end. To keep the rider position consistent with what we have today, we shortened the stem length, which also makes for quick handling. The head angle, meanwhile, was slackened by 1.5 degrees to create an aggressive 69.5-degree angle. Those two changes combine to create a bike that's much more confident at speed and descending through steep and rough terrain. But you're probably thinking, "That slack of a head angle will make a cross country bike floppy and slow, right?" Wrong. The bike and suspension team tested dozens of tuning setups and fork offsets until settling on what gave us the best balance of stability and snappy handling, leaving you with a 42mm fork offset. You can have your cake and eat it, too."

Mmmmmm..... If only i could say all the things i know apart from what Rudi Pollard has already stated....

The marketing team is just busy formulating why this is the best suspension design. #HorizonatalisBest

 

I think this decision was made as a business decision, not a technical one. With much input fro m the marketing guys.

 

Hmmmm... not sure what to make of that. Seeking stiffness gains? Pedaling efficiency at the expense of technical prowess and suspension performance? Mind you, it's the way all the top end XC whips are going now. Solid rear tri with flex properties and a single pivot linkage-driven suspension design. 

 

As above, there could be benefits that we can draw on, but I don't think the motivation for the change was the technical things listed above.
