CO2 Inflator - What to look for?

So this weekend I needed a bailout by some trail buddies with a CO2 bomb since I didn't carry my own (I know, silly me). I know I need to buy one, but there are a million different types and I would hate to buy twice. There are a couple of versions in terms of functionality, but here are the main ones:

  • Free flowing (i.e. as soon as you screw that bottle in, it empties it) - Two Handed Operation
  • Trigger (features a push or trigger mechanism turning flow on or off) - One Handed Operation
  • Valve (has a knob that can be turned to allow gas to flow at a rate of your choosing, as well as be shut off completely) - Two handed operation

Then in terms of valve fitment, there are also a few options:

  • Press-on (Presta Only)
  • Press-on (Presta + Shrader)
  • Screw-on (Presta Only)
  • Screw-on (Presta + Shrader)

Given these options, which type should I go for? Is one better or more preferable than the other? I quite liked the feel of the press-on trigger type I used this weekend. It was super straightforward and I could keep my bike upright with one hand while inflating the tire with the other, which was nice.

All that being said (Oom Chris W. you must check here), THIS seems to be awesome, but the selling price is more than the RRP? What kind? I really like the look of THIS Lezyne as well. Nice and minimalistic.

Groente!

Hate the screw on, if have removable core I find the cold co2 shrinks it enough to unscrew core when removing bomb adapters

i used to use the screw on to ensure no leaks but after a few valve core blow outs when removing i really hate using them. the shut off valve is quite awesome though.

I dont think you covered it but there is another type. you screw the canister in and then the push on operation opens the flow. then when removing it shuts off. I have a Ryder one which is also tiny and super lightweight if that matters to you.

Happened to me a few times too. Still not gotten around to replacing the screw on unit I use though. Need to make work of this. Agree the press-on unit sounds like a better option.

My screw on one was thrown away mid ride in frustration.

 Arghh thanks for this Savage. Makes sense now. Wanted to leave my bike on the side of farm road, nearly stranded 60km from home. Happened to me twice. Luckily I carry a tjoepie with.
