Road cyclist --think before you ride,

I agree fully that Riders must think before riding any route.

Especially if you are not familiar with an area.

However if I only had to cycle on roads with a shoulder I would not be able to get out of the city or I would have to get on the Highway.

So therefore , Time of day and conditions outside is a big part of decision to ride.

For sure.

There is no right and wrong on this subject. We all decide our rides depending on our own risk profile.

Came across two riders on Du Toits Kloof Pass once, riding two abreast in the middle of the road on the way up ie very slowly. I came up from behind around a blind corner, saw them and was able to slow down and pass around them. On a tighter corner with less forward vision and less time to react, travelling at the legal 100km/h on that pass, it would have been a near miss or I might have hit them from behind. I'm sorry Mr.Idiot Cyclist, but if there was traffic approaching from the front and I was forced to choose, I would have mowed you over before hitting another car head-on.

Exactly.

Riding here in Denmark really has opened my eyes to the "risks" I took riding my road bike in SA.

I am almost a reformed rehabilitated roadie now :-)

Fixed.

Allowing users to add notes such as "no shoulder" and "fast traffic" to segments in Strava would be quite helpful to cyclists who don't know the area.

Just in case anyone knows someone.

Thought this could have been us, then read this :P

Good points previously and maybe it's true that we 'all' need to adjust our attitudes. It was once said that maybe bike lanes are not a good idea as we then feel we are entitled to ride 'in our demarcated area' and we can ride there 2 or 3 abreast even knowing that on a busy week morning taxis or other motorists 'will' make use of that lane to get by congestion. The lanes possibly also create animosity towards cyclists through creating frustration for businesses, motorists, etc. Maybe in a broader sense there needs to be more mutual respect between us and motorists.

Kumba yaa...
