How far to upgrade before it's not economical?

Ride what you have till it wears out and then look at either upgrading the drive train, or you may even have shifted your expectations of what you want from a bike and then consider a trail bike or the like.

If the brakes do not function properly, first give them a good bleed and have the pads checked for contamination. Should this not work, then look at better brakes.

My conservative view, ride the bloody thing for now and pimp or replace the bike in the not too distant future once you have had some months in the saddle.

New Slx upgrade kit for R3K

Does your current bike have a Lefty fork or standard?

Inevitable that a new, used bike is going to be much better value overall as you will end up changing up wheels, then get the fork itch, then the frame will have too steep a head tube and be old geometry and of course you'll need a dropper post. ;)

Only a standard RockShox Gold 100mm something.

I do need to check out the geo - I find it really hard to manual over roots etc (not that I'm good at it) but it seems very long and planted.

Thanks very much for all your help and advice guys!

Great food for thought.

Agree that I'll just ride it like I stole it and replace upgrade as necessary until I can get a Trance or similar.

I'll probably keep the old girl for long dirt road rides / exploration days.

Sunrace 10 speed 11-42 sounds like a win!

Regarding the brakes, what diameter are your rotors? I just replaced my 160mm front one with a 180mm and it made a huge difference. Needed a adapter for the caliper as well.

The range on the 1x11 and 1x10 will be the same if you run 11-42 with say a 32 upfront.  So no real need to upgrade unless you unhappy with the shifting.  You can run a 10-42 with 1x11 with an XD driver but that's a whole lot of swapping. Sunrace 11-42 MX3 works nicely.  A nice cheap upgrade is to run an oval 32t in front.  Dropper is also good value if you not concerned about weight.  Then hubs/wheels.  Then fork.  Then Dual.  Then Carbon bits.  Then 1x12. And the list goes on

Good call. 200 or nothing!
