WTF type crashes

Riding in a race about 7km from the finish, looking at my Garmin instead of focusing on the road and not seeing the cyclist standing on the side of the road.

Clipped his bike and I went flying OTB, cracked the back of my helmet, a sore hand and a clearly bent back rotor.  Did a bit of DIY to loosen the back brake caliper just enough for the braking to not be to bad.  Luckily no serious damage and was able to finish the race.

And then my big crash last year.

Chasing some guys down Hellshoogte, Shifting gears, chain slip, OTB cant breath blah blah blah.

I can recommend Dr Prinsloo at Mediclinic Stellenboch. Also a very serious cyclist.

Damage to me: R130 000 Thank goodness for medical aid. They covered most of fees.

Damage to bike: R500.

What did you break for R130 000? and the R500 on the bike? Bartape?

Riding in a USN race at Avianto a few years ago: -

Just after the start (so big bunch) up a hill and then left over some rocks. Back tyre burped and I went down hard. Teenage boy next to me said "Are you alright Tannie?"

Not wanting to appear soft jumped back on the bike and disappeared around the corner. Stopped to assess damage. Badly bruised legs, saddle totally the wrong way (must have looked really funny riding away like that) and slim leaking all over the place. Fixed the damage to the bike and continued. Flat again about 15km later. Stopped and put a tube in.

About 5 km later, hit a rock and ended up going OTB. Still to this day do not know what happened there.

Damage to body assessed weeks later after massive bruises and haematoma healed - broken coccyx that had to be surgically removed.

Cruising through West Coast National Park. Ostrich mommy and babies out on their morning walk so I stay far behind and freewheel. She looks at me once then ignores me. Idiot in car rides right up behind the kids, mommy goes apes#1t and charges straight past car towards me. I turn tail and stomp on pedals, chain snaps and I get whipped into the tar. Mommy struts off looking pleased with herself. Wife said the roastie was deep enough to see the bone below the elbow.

Hectic, well done on finishing that race. I think I would have curled up in a ball and quit after the initial fall!

Clavical....

Glenoid fossa

Scapula

4 ribs

ICU for a couple of days.

I only skid for a meter or 2. Went straight down, first point of contacted was the front of my shoulder and head. Helmet, shirt, gloves and shoes m*rtoe. Still use the glasses when working in the garden.

The derailer bent, just bent it back and working as new. Bartape and chain was replaced.

I have only been riding for a few months. Fell twice so far.

First time was around one of those traffic circles in the Cradle. Was focusing too much on the curb in front of me, and that's where my bike went. Front tyre clipped the side of the pavement and I went over my handlebars at about 15km/ph. Bent handle bars, some road rash, bruised hip and shoulder. Had to ride about 5km back to my car. Was an interesting ride as the handlebars were all bent and had blood pouring down my leg from my knee. LBS fixed my bike as part of her first service, which cost nothing.

For my very next ride I put clipless pedals on my bike. Had ridden for about 2 hours and stopped multiple times with no issues. Coming to a stop outside Bidon I unclip my right foot (as I had done a few times previously) and very slowly fall to the left. Hit the ground with my left foot still clipped in. Still not sure how I managed to unclip that foot and get up so quickly. My right calf got a bit bruised up. My ego was definitely bruised quite a bit.

Reading all of these stories and considering how frequently I take dirt naps, I'm quite surprised that I've never broken any bones.

Maybe, just maybe, I need to buy a poncho...

Glad it all turned out okay.

Now you can answer the question - for an upgrade like you had done would one recommend Carbon or Titanium?

Titanium...my arm actually beeped going through airport security recently [emoji23] cool opportunity to show off your scar!

Beautiful country road 20 kms north of Durbanville.

Peaceful and lots of chirps flowing.

Sharp L approaching.

I veer L and presume my cycling buddy right next to me understands that the course is no longer straight. See Strava map sent the day before.

Whack! Bang! Slide! Wtf!

Wrists sprained

Saddle charred and handle bars bent.

Couldn't drive for a week. It was eina. Fortunately, no bones broken.
