Hi guys.

So I got myself two new frames. Only thing is I need to build it up. Any suggestions on where I can learn to braze? These will be fixies. The tubing is Columbus sl and Columbus cromo. The lugs and investment cast lugs. One set is stainless steel.

Wow, this should be interesting.

I would start by building a jig to ensure that the dropouts, bottom bracket and headtube can remain in alignment throughout the complete process. Even with tight fitting lugs and connectors it will be very difficult to maintain alignment once you start putting heat into the tubes.

This bike builder has a good thread going, he uses lug-less joints throughout, but the alignment principles remain the same. Take a look for some inspiration.

Good luck!

Oh this is going to be an awesome adventure!! Please keep the thread up to date as you go along.

As per the above, where did you get the kit from?

Regarding where to start, do some homework on the Hub, there was a guy that DIY built a carbon frame some time ago, guessing about 5 years ago, which showed in brilliant detail how his jig was set up.

Nice. I still have some lugs and fitting from years earlier.

Hi Guys,

Funny story, Ive always been a keen bike rider, done argus multiple times, MTB races etc. Always wanted to build a bike.

I researched for months online. I found the best place to buy everything at one place was this place in the UK

http://ceeway.com/ i went over to the uk for business and had it shipped locally.

The tubes and lugs have been sitting in my garage for about 2 years. Had a little boy and now have just had twins.  But both my bikes have been stolen , so this is a good option right now.

Ill keep this updated. Ive just moved to PE as well and contacted Momsen bikes as their head office is here.

Mercer bikes in cape town might be able to help with advice. He build his own bikes.

Hi, well done on taking on twins, again.

Please feel free to give me a call to discuss details of design, software or jig building. Lots of small tips that will save you many frustrations.

Hi Tommymac

Ooooo you've started something now; there's no turning back

I'm guessing there's quite a few Hubbers that have built up their own framesets and those that have lovingly restored old classics.

Not too many im guessing that have built their own bicycles from scratch.

We will all be following this thread religiously and expect you to document the build process, along with loads of pictures.

Good luck with the build and enjoy the process

Are you needing a jig?

Most of those tubes look pre-cut to length?  So is it just a matter of putting together and brazing?

Or you needing to still cut the tubes ?

Hi Shaper, Yes, I will need to get a jig, i've looked at the 80:20 aluminium profiles that you can make one out of.

All tubes come a standard length, The need to be measured depending on your height and frame size your wanting to build. Then mitering.

I'm going to need all the help i can get.

Your definition of "building up a bike" is very different to the one i'm familiar with!

I'm guessing you're a handyman/hobbyist of sorts!

Good Luck. Nice project.

I don't know any frame builders in PE, but John Steggman lives in Plett, not too far away to come from PE. John, as far as I know, built quite a few frames in his day and he might well have jigs etc. I know he still has quite a few deropouts and tubes. If you're interested, pm me and I'll give you a phone number.
