27.5+ / 6fattie opinions?

Ive made a few recent posts about how to upgrade my current Stumpy to something more enduro orientated, and after a visit with droo at Stoke suspension we came to the conclusion it would be easier to just sell the bike and buy something better specced

I have my eyes on a 2016 stumpy which is a bit slacker, has a 150mm Fox Fork  but is a 27.5+ (2.5inch tyres)

The price is really good and i heard these bikes have all the benefits of a 29er but tonnes more traction and they are a lot of fun

Before taking the plunge, what are your opinions?

I hardly see any for sale, not sure if that's a good or a bad sign

As always, appreciate the insight!

Not a bad option as you can fit normal 29" wheels if you don't like plus tires. Plus bikes are fun but they are more suited to slower technical riding. So it depends what your needs are. I would rather get a 29er and fit fat tyres.

That's how you meant to type it!!

I've got a 6Fattie and it's AWESOME!

this quoted from a post I made on another thread

"I went from 29'ers to my fattie on the advice of my lbs but  having never ridden one ... I trust my lbs and they know my riding style.. and it's THE.BEST.EVER!!!

The bike climbs climbs brilliantly, descends brilliantly, grips like crazy...  "

You don't say if your Stumpy is a 26er or a 29er.

I have a 29er and I swear by them. However my environment changed a bit and I needed a bike for here and for there. So the 29er stayed here and I went looking for one of those really FAT bikes with the 4" tires. My lbs didn't have my size and offered me a ride on a 27+. Needless to say, I bought one and I am rally happy with it. I am not too sure, but I guess you might not be as satisfied if you come from the 26er direction.

I guess in the end you ask for advise, but it horses for courses and you need to make up your own mind.

Also have a 2016 Stumpy 650B+. The plus tyres are awesome fun, but I have swopped them out for a set of 29ers. Original plan was to swap wheelsets depending on the day and terain, but I nor permanently have the 29ers on - just personal preference, I find they are as grippy with my current set-up, and are lighter and roll better (I am currently doing some stage races and use my Stumpy for that - once that calms down again I may find myself on the plus wheels again more often).

Just one or two things to take into consideration with the Spez Stumpy 6Fattie:

- Stock rims are 29mm internal width - although this is wide, it is way too narrow for 3.0" wide tyres. If you run the pressures you'd want to with those tyres (1.0 - 1.2 bar) you will get allot of squirming. This leaves you with the option of upgrading to wider rims (40mm or wider).

- If you do want to upgrade to wider rims you will most likely do the whole wheelset because the hubs are 24 and 28 hole - very hard to find 27.5 rims with 40mm internal width or more in that hole pattern.

- Tyres are 3.0" - you may want to consider 2.8" - same benefits, but just rolls a bit better IMO.

- Sidewalls of plus tyres are weaker, but Maxxis will be releasing some versions with stronger sidewalls soon - they are pricey though, so beware of that.

Don't let the above put you off plus tyres because they are awesome. And the fact that you can go to 29" wheels at any stage is a huge advantage in my books. The rim width and hub configuration on the Specialized just makes it slightly harder to do after market mods on the plus set-up...

That being said, my plus wheelset currently resides on a long travel steel hardtail - most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Thanks for all the tips guys!

My current stumpy is a 29er, but i just found it too sketchy on jumps and drops etc

The guy mentioned you can put 29" wheels on the bike and the idea going forward is to save up and buy a second set of 29" wheels for marathon rides, and the 27+ for the fun stuff which will be 90% of my riding

I hope my current bike sells fast so i can buy the 27+ bike asap!

Coming off a 2005 Santa Cruz V10 i think any bike would feel sketchy on jumps and drops.

Seeing as i havent ridden in a while, let alone a 29er, i know im mostly to blame but i want a bike that's more forgiving and feels more stable getting back into the sport

haha Ja thats not exactly apples for apples is it.

I have a Stumpy 29er and must say that im riding same stuff i was on my Trance 27.5 and it feels way smoother (bigger wheels n all ) but then again i aint sending any big road gaps or such. It handles most medium type stuff no problem.

I just found out that the 6fattie bike i was going to buy is a medium, i thought it was a Large

And im 1.83m

My V10 was a medium and i didnt mind it, are there any benefits with riding a smaller bike? or is it a complete no no?

It sucks because thats the only 6fattie i see for sale at the moment

Just seeing if there is a way to make a plan to make a medium work, or if it makes the bike easier to jump / handle etc

I'm 1,84m and have a specialized fuse (large). Perfect fit, thinking a medium will be to small for you.
