Mechanical doping is a go? :/

I think thermal cameras make sense for detection, not for confirmation.

You'd need to get the bike inspected and motor found no matter what sort of scanning anything you're using.

Thermal cameras will get you a 100% false positive on a climb because the heat from a 100 watt electric motor is < 10% of the heat from a 1600 watt human motor.

Thermal cameras have been tested, and the seat tube is generally warmer than the rest of the frame simply from being next to warm tires and warm legs.

Thermal cameras are also unsafe because you need to use them when the motor is being used -- or soon after -- so you need yet another motorbike in the peloton.

Thermal cameras are easily bypassed because you simply stop using the electric motor when said motorbike is next to you.

Here is a fix, just sorry it isn't Friday yet because it sounds like a Friday discussion taking this suggestion further:

Think F1 tyres.... Single supplier, you get a choice of 2 or 3 each race

All competitors race on bikes selected by a panel which look at the day's stage beforehand...

So:

Tour de Suisse, sponsored by BMC

Giro, sponsored by Bianchi

Vuelta, sponsored by Orbea

One tyre supplier was introduced to curb costs with multiple tyre developers 'out developing' each other, not to regulate rubber compounds, tread patterns etc. Taking away teams' right to choose their own equipment will be suicide for the industry. Unlike F1, the guy in the street actually has access to the same bikes the pro's ride, you can even have the same motors fitted if you have the budget.

Well exactly, use the motor during the race to save energy, then turn it off on the last 1km.... its a PR thing.

Why not just weigh the bikes.

It is not difficult to predict the weight of a bike. Every component has been weighed by the weight weenies a million times over. Examine the bikes that are suspect. Old tech ways.

Many bikes carry ballast to get them to the 6.8kg limit, so won't be a reliable method.

But surely there must a more reliable method than pointing an iPad at a bike.

But it's quite an expensive iPad.

Between this, e-bikes for able bodied fit riders and amateurs doping I despair for the future generations (not that the older generations didn't but they didn't have as much choice I suppose ...)

Imo they should scrap the 6.8kg weight limit - then they can screen bikes by weighing them.

(the limit is way past due for revision or re-consideration)

But it's required for safety reasons
