Liquor city used to sell unlabeled wine at R25,00 it is a very palatable wine, it turned out to be a Napier blend, I luckily bought a whole lot of it at the time, it makes for an interesting talking point when you take out this unlabeled wine at the dinner table. Liquor city has some house brands at very good prices that are really not bad for what you pay for it. Tall horse makes a Shiraz sold @ R40 odd that is my go to wine, it really is a great fireside sipping red.

If you enjoy a white, you can certainly try Spier's Chenin Blanc also at about R40 a bottle

R80,00 a bottle is seen as cheap? Then I need to up my game... I set myself a cap at max R95,00 thinking you must get something desent at that price.

you will certainly find a lot of  good wines at that price point! When we looking for gems we will not go higher than R80.00  generally we will look in the 40-60 range but sometimes there is something new that we would be willing to go up to R80 for.

I am very partial to Nuy between Worcester and Robertson. They have a great selection of whites and reds ,as well as the odd fortified and some sparkling. Their grape juice is some of the best I have tasted.

My favourites are the Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage for the red. Their Chant de Nuit is a very exciting white, which has converted me to the white side from being a red snob. I am also partial to the Sauvignon Blanc.

As far as their upper tier wines are concerned, the Argilla red is simply sublime. You can only order online, unless you drive to the Nuy on the Hill wine-tasting venue on the R62. Georgians are lucky in that they have the only off-site sales venue at Golden Harvest.

Still, Nuy ranks VERY HIGHLY in my opinion. I will be stopping there on my way to the Karoo to Coast on Friday. It has become a bit of a ritual with me and the missus.

The Pino is certainly top notch , if you enjoy wines from the Robertson region you should try Springfield estate, their Bordeaux blend is really good and their Sauv Blanc is one the best I have had

Everything from Springfield!

A bit pricey but very worth it. My favourite reds for special ocations are wholeberry and (more special) work of time. For taking to suppers with friends, Thunderchild (more because of the charity story behind it)

And if you prefer white, Miss Lucy is very good.

Montagu Muskadel(red), Van Lovern Colombar(Neils pick) and Ashton Cellar Chenin blanc and Sauvingnon Blanc are some of my favourites.

Red wines I just stick to our local cellar Ashton.

Next time you go to van loveren to get your white wine, taste their African Java Pinotage

I have picked up a habit from a friend that has a mission to find really good Cheap wine , max R80,00 a bottle, we have found some really good cheap wines, It is so easy to get caught up in the pretentious world of wine where a lot of people think that an expensive wine is a good one. Some of the wines that we have found can hold their own against wines 4 x their price.

What's your favourites in this category?

I like the Petit range - specifically Petit pinotage and Petit cab sav. Van Loveren also make a 'Tangled Tree' range in a plastic bottle which is great if you need to take wine on your overnight hike.

Absolutely agree.

Was at a winetasting once (renowned cellar) and they had their flagship wine at R600 per bottle - a red blend.  The winemaker explained the process to get to the top wine in detail - which was impressive to say the least.  Then I tasted their R80/bottle Pinotage.  Which was a MUCH BETTER option.

I normally snoop around for whites at about R50-60 per bottle.  Reds for a little more.

If I get a cultivar that I haven't tasted before (Barbera, Cab Franc, Tempranillo, etc) I'll go up to R100-R150.

Tassies has won many a blind tasting when it had a cork and not screw-top.

True story and Platter was one of the tasters!

My wife drank my 2 bottles of corked tassies from my collection..... "but I thought it was cooking wine.."

Love the Boplaas reds - Portuguese cultivars - Tinta is great. Their Dry Red very drinkable.

Tokara makes some very, very nice Shiraz.

My favourite "good value for money" wines comes from the Robertson area. You can't really go wrong. Van Loveren makes a stunning selection of reds and whites.

Fairview wines, just outside Paarl, are also great!!

My wife and I met at Van Loveren, so every year we have a bottle of Van Loveren on 30 Sep to celebrate.

Miles Mossop, the Tokara wine maker, was at school with my wife. He has a couple of ha of his own and makes his own wines, named after his kids. Max- red blend, Saskia- dry white blend, and Kika a Nobel Late Harvest. Bloody expensive(R300 for Max)- but also very good.

are you referring to the Ken forrester range? If so, you can try the Chardonnay... if you enjoy a crisp white.

My Favourite Cheap wines would be the following:

Red:

Tall horse Shiraz

Durbanville Hills Merlot

Lautarul Pinot Noir - from Romania of all places

Od Bin 613 from Checkers

KWV Café Culture

Alto Rouge

Darling Chocoholic

Leuwenkuil Shiraz

White:

Spier Chenin Blanc

Leuwenkuil Chenin Blanc

Ken forrester Pitit Chardonnay

Hill&Dale Sauv Blanc

Not so classic.... I had a buyer for it.... otherwise I wouldn't have been looking for it....

So now I collect Whiskey..... wife doesn't drink that..... :)

That said - I am quite partial to this one... https://www.lavierge.co.za/index.php?_route_=online-red-wines&product_id=57

The name might be something to do with it....

Any Bordeaux blend  is great for me.  Some better than others.

With a name like that it is a good assumption to assume Bacchus would also find this his much favoured bottle of LO.
