Meneer Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Is the committee 1 member short? PPA website still has 12 committee members on it - AGM was quite a few weeks back. From the PPA CEO's newsletter sent out on Monday: "Our AGM took place on 13 September and we were speculating whether this one would turn out to be another heated affair similar to the 2015 meeting, or the slightly tamer 2016 AGM.As it turned out, we barely managed the required quorum of 50 members and we only received 5 nominations for 6 Exco positions that had to be filled. All 5 nominees were current Exco members seeking re-election. No formal voting was therefore required, but the members present at the meeting ratified all 5 nominations. My AGM report was a review of the previous 12 months and it is available on the PPA website. I’ll provide a very brief recap here - should you want more detail, please refer to the website, or contact me directly."
Pure Savage Posted October 4, 2017 Author Posted October 4, 2017 Lets keep this thread on track, regardless of who has to organise events, we need solutions that will attract youngsters. (We are very concerned about this as in 4 years there will be nobody for us to wheel suck.)
OneLove Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 I do both road and MTB and I think the MTB events are way more value for money. I wanted to do all the Sportif's but when I had to make a choice between the Sportif and the Trailseeker which is R50 more it was a no brainer. I do see and hear(passing on the right!) lots of youngsters at MTB events. #If the Sportif was R150 I would of probably been lined up at the start.
Pure Savage Posted October 4, 2017 Author Posted October 4, 2017 Some good timing, but Die Burger just announced when entries will open for this years event. Cost R350 and R330 if you are PPA If you enter before middle of November you can win a Bianchi. - This is what they are going with to try and up the numbers. I am not sure that this is going to grow their numbers, especially in the youth categories. I am sure those that would appreciate a Bianchi would enter any way. Maybe they should have read the article before opening entries. #JustSaying
Pure Savage Posted October 4, 2017 Author Posted October 4, 2017 Hmmm tweet has just been deleted, maybe they are going to lead with, "New discounted rate for U/18." More chance of Lance giving his jerseys back
EmJayZA Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 There has been quite a surge in triathlons, which I am sure will account for some of the losses. We have new races popping up, and seen a lot more tri-related stores and coaches coming out of the wood works too. The new races are not small either, with entries around the 1500 mark per event (and even more in some instances).

City Cycling Athletic Club Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Just like empty stadia at team sports, organisers have to engage younger audiences differently. And no use complaining about their culture, its fact. Seemless integration of social media, entry platforms, results sharing, live updates of in race progress etc should be considered. Think, if its not shared, it did not happen. Old school, badly maintained websites don’t cut it anymore. Look at PPA and WPCA facebook, twitter, strava, instagram etc accounts and see what I mean. If you can’t engage with the newer generations how do you expect them to come? Then event differentiation and branding needs attention: - Best after event beer race - Best child friendly race - Most scenic race - Most climbing race etc Race organisers need to get together and strategically position each race on the calender. BRANDING, INSTITUTIONS, like the CTCT. That is something that can be sponsored. Create the NEED to ride, and no, it’s not just about the love of riding. In my opinion that is what WPCA should be doing to grow the sport.i like your ideas esp with social media - but remember you need a human to push that send button - WPCA does not have 1 paid employee all are volunteers who sacrifice their family, riding and spare time doing what they are doing. AND AT THE MOMENT WE ARE FAST RUNNING OUT OF BODIES WILLING TO DO WHAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY DOING.

Nibali Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I rate criterium racing is the answer to get more youngsters back into the sport. Starting at school level, having a kermis/fete (or kermesse) at/around the school grounds with a race for each age might draw people to it (and make it a inter-school thing with a few events between neighboring schools). And you can kuier with your mates after the race, who just came down to have a boerie roll and laugh at the face you make when suffering. Some of these boerie-eating youngsters might think, hey, this looks like fun and try and race the next one. Then go over to varsity. Start at your own Varsity and have a league between the resses, day houses and faculty houses. Have a beer tent or 2, through in a case of beer for the res with the most attendance and you suddenly have a bustling student racing scene (cause lets face it, the best way to attract any student is to add alcohol). Hopefully you then grow your pool of young guns who want to try their hand at elite racing?

The PPA does have permanent people. Why not join forces? Also, look Pure Savage volunteering his time. Have you ever considered whether the old school practice of an AGM and formal creation of committees and sub-committees are still viable? A core task team at the WPCA can easily informally engage avid cyclists with expertise or keen interests and on a case by case basis engage them. You will find social media platform experts, administration aficionados, marketing gurus and strategic thinkers by just asking and scanning sites like this. Put the community back in Sport Administration and you might be pleasantly surprised
Icycling Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Below the email I sent to PPA leagues earlier this year. They seem to have done part of it but then decided not to accommodate their biggest support as Pure Savage pointed out - the Vets. If Dads and Moms are not been accommodated how will the kids get to the event? -----Original Message-----From: Peter [mailto:icycling] Sent: Wednesday, March 01, 2017 5:48 PMTo: Shana WeberSubject: league cat!Hi League sub committee,Make it simple and I believe CSA will allow this formula as they do allow it for themselves examples - SA madison (open) championship, 25 mile Paarl boxing day etc.1. Do not have an Elite league (this is a UCI category - semantics) - call it an open league. Cyclist are allowed to ride this Open league by seeding / race distance i.e. if all the races in the PPA series do not go over UCI Junior distance then Juniors can ride on there restricted gears. Open would probably be anyone with an A to C seeding or motivation letter and over the age of 16 / 17 years old (not sure what Junior is).2. Have scholars league as per UCI rules and if the Open league has a race above UCI Junior race distance then have a junior league.3. Have Vets league 30 plus, 40 plus etc. If a 50 year old wants too and qualities by seeding to ride the open league - the choice is in his hand. 4. Does it really matter if a person move between league cat during a season - if a person does are they likely to win enough point to win the league in any cat? If not why not allow it at an administration / number cost. Different horses for different courses. On a personal level if I were ever to ride the PPA leagues again I would like to ride the flat league races if any in an Open cat and the Mountainous ones in the 40 plus vets cat. Why should this be an issue if I still had an A to C seeding?RegardsPeter Wheeler

CSA and its regions dont realise the gold mine they are sitting on with Didata doing so well - now is the time to strike.
Pure Savage Posted October 6, 2017 Author Posted October 6, 2017 Happy to report that someone has kindly offered to sponsor two juniors entry fees for the rest of the year for road events. Over the past few days I have been reminded just why I love the hub. Such amazing people that are really interested in the community. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
