Best route from Cape Town to Stellenbosch?

Can anyone offer some advice on the best (ideally safe, scenic and reasonably challenging) road route? I don't mind taking some detours.

In short:

 

Town --> be on the lookout for Paarden Island bikejackers

Milnerton --> west coast cycle lane

Edgemead --> going over Bosmansdam - keep 'em peeled

Plattekloof --> traffic

Jip de Jager --> traffic

Old Oak --> beware the industrial zone

Bottelary --> traffic - morons aplenty

Kromme Rhee --> safer than passing Khayamandi

R44 --> beware the section just before town. Don't go alone.
