Which watch for a kid

Guys I agree with the sentiment of letting her run for the fun of it. Let me go back one step. We started out looking for a watch that can be phoned by the parent to locate the child. These watches also had GPS tracking that would raise an alarm when certain boundaries are crossed. We bought a watch but it was not working properly and the shop also could not get it to work. They gave me another one with the same outcome and we gave it back. Shop could not replace it as the had no more stock and did not knew when the new consignment would arrive.

In the mean time she started doing cross country as a winter program and is doing very well. So I started looking at training watches knowing that I won't be able to phone her but were hoping the tracking bit can work as she does not have a smart phone. It seems as if you cannot have the best of both worlds. Most of her athlete peer group has "training"watches............

She has a very good coach at school and they train after school.

So this is where I am currently.

Rule 1.

Don't live your dreams through your kid's eyes. Let her run for fun, without the downside of disappointment of letting you down.

Get her an apple watch

LOL. Can't even afford it for myself. Train with Wahoo Ticker X and download the data through Strava (the free version).

What about my own dreams[emoji13]

I kinda agree that she should probably just run for fun at this age and not get too technical, but I get that as a parent you at least want the tracking info for safety,so here are some suggestions.

Check for watches that have Strava integration. I think you might need a premium account, but then you can track her on the map.

A 2nd hand Garmin can be a good option, people are often upgrading and selling theirs.

The TomTom watches aren't too bad for the price and some have a built in optical HR monitor (which isn't quite as accurate as a belt). Their features are a bit more limited than the Garmin.  I've also heard TomTom is shutting down their fitness department and the current software does have a bug or two (e.g. pacing info)

I've had a couple of GPS watches and there is an inherent variability with GPS tracking, don't expect it to be 100% accurate, but it's a decent guideline. Also, none of them have accurate current pace info, apparently a foot pod is the way to go for this.

Perfect for what you need it to do - small, light and does everything you need it to do. Straps are not the longest lasting but can easily be replaced.

I had the male version of this and had to basically give it away because the strap was gonna cost 600 bucks from Garmin. Even from Amazon it was a rip off. I would steer well clear of those.

When I replaced it I looked for a watch that would accommodate any strap because Garmin straps are pathetic. I bought the fr230 not and you can buy a replica strap for €10. I bought three.. That should last me a fair bit of time! As you can see after 15 months the original strap is shot. Garmin are good kit.. But their straps are pathetic and expensive

What happened to the good old Casio at this age?

There is an oke in pinetown that runs without a watch.. Nevermind the Casio. He has well over ten silver comrades under his belt. The one year he ran a 7:31.... Still runs without a watch

Maybe he could have won it if he had a watch :P

James Cunnama also says he runs best when just listening to his body.

But then if you spend most of your day training as an athlete you should know your body. For a part-timer like me, it's not so easy so the watch is helpful.
