Quality of Bike Service from Bike Shops

Perhaps you would've gotten better service if you didn't rock up just before closing time, the day before the 94.7 insisting that they check every single bolt on your bike with a torque wrench, because you couldn't be bothered to do it yourself or make the time to bring the bike in at a decent time. Just my opinion.

Wasn’t like 5 minutes before closing time. And it was an offered service which I paid the quoted price. I believe I had full rights to demand its done properly.

And there was no sign on the door which said they did poorer quality work 45 minutes before closing compare to other time of the day, so respectfully thats a dumb remark.

Ja well, but it is pretty obvious from complaints and anecdotal evidence that bike shops are extremely busy in the week or 2 before a major event. I know that 2 of the mechanics who I use, do strictly pre-booked work in the busy periods before events like the Argus and the Epic. The one even put up a sign at his door to that effect. You can simply forget to get help then by just walking in the front door. (Yes, they have helped me in an emergency, and they try, but you cannot bargain on it.)

So, if it is for a routine service, I would book my bike in a long time in advance and make the booking for at least 2 or 3 weeks before the big day. That way the mechanic is not quite so rushed and you are more likely to get a proper job. It also allows you to ride the bike to make sure all is well before D-day.

Agreed, if they were willing to take your money they should be willing to give you the service you paid for.

The you arent the guilty party here, greed is.

I have been asked to come back after busy event weekend.

They informed me that workshop was full and there was not enough time to finish urgent work they had, as my job was less urgent and not gonna keep me from riding (think was wheel true on a set I had bought second hand) they would rather attend to me next week.

Worked well for me and I was happy they were looking after the quality of work done.

This is exactly what I think we all looking for...

Communication!!

Whether it is like this letting you know its not gonna happen as they too busy and not setting you up for disappointment or just a call to let you know it very busy and not going to be done now.

Fair enough, but just remember, just because you pay for something, sadly doesn't mean you get what you pay for. Sad as it is, that's the reality.

And don't tell me that 45mins before you go home on a busy Saturday before a huge event that you wouldn't also just want to go home. Oh wait, that's right, you probably don't work Saturdays. I'm not saying the shop is innocent. Not at all. But neither are you.

Perhaps be a bit more considerate next time. Or hell, just keep in mind that people get **** service just before closing on the day before a big event. Then avoid that. Sometimes we have to think for ourselves a bit.

So, respectfully, Danie, we're not going to see eye to eye on this matter. Let's just agree to disagree.

Think thats the OPs issue, you should get what you pay for.

While this is true, moaning about it is not going to change anything. We are in a situation where in all service industries in South Africa, we have to adapt and improvise. That is just the sad reality.

So instead of being frustrated because some poor, minimum wage bike mechanic doesn't fix my bike properly on a Saturday before closing, I simply don't have my bike fixed on a Saturday before closing. Much less stress for me.

Anyway, that's just my perspective. Use it or not. I'm not in the mood for an argument over the internet. It's long weekend after all and in Cape Town, work stops the day before a long weekend.

Who's arguing?

Thats your perspective. Others might not share the same view as you.

Nobody is telling you that your view is wrong and that you must change it, but you are telling OP that his is and that he must change his. People are allowed to disagree with that without you feeling that its an argument.

I am not at all telling him to change his view. I did, however, take offence at the fact that he considered my remark stupid. I was merely stating that perhaps being considerate towards the staff who don't want to be there late on a Saturday afternoon. But maybe I am the only one that thinks like this. Maybe it's because I used to work in retail that I have a different perspective. Perhaps some people who have never worked in retail will never have that perspective.

And fair enough, it is there job and they get paid to do it, but I find it very difficult to believe that no one on this forum has never done a half arsed job because they didn't feel like working on a particular day. Some of us are just in a better position to get away with, because perhaps we do not directly deal with customers or we can carry on tomorrow or whatever. I know I have been misluk at work plenty. It's human. We are not robots. And therefor I take into consideration that the mechanic at the shop will probably do a bad job late on a Saturday afternoon. And I don't particularly blame him. So I either fix it myself or take it early.
