Child carrier/ baby seat

Knees are slightly out. With 2 up I use normal shoes (I have trail pedals) and the pace is leisurely. Clipped in and at race pace it might be a problem. With kids we average about 10km/h.

Thule Ridealong mini. Its at the front on the bike. With a backrest. And you can see your child and see them enjoy it. Paid 1700 i think. Has a harness etc. I like it. Only issue is your knees hit sometimes on it. But okay i am 1.98m tall. So maybe just my issue.

We have a Giant seat mounted behind one of Wifey's bikes, and a Star Seat mounted on one of mine. Both work lekker.

BabyFace tends to fall asleep after a while on the giant seat, and tend to make Weeeeeeweeeeeeeweeee sounds when on the Star seat.

Have to be careful with the starseat though, as she doesn't know how to lean into corners yet.

PS: mounting child carriers on a singlespeed in a hilly town is stupid, you want the low range. And dropper posts make setting off easier.

I take my 3 year old kid to school each morning on the Star seat. He loves it. And I love it because I don't have to sit in traffic.

The knees thing is a bit of an issue, but you're not pushing hard, or riding like that for hours, so it's ok.

I've ridden some gnarly single track out in Grabouw with him sitting on the seat, and while the bike behaves quite differently, it's loads of fun for everyone.

Me personally, I can't stand the kids bike seats that go between myself and the handlebars.

I bought a weride, used it once and sold it. They restrict your handlebar movement so you have limited turning circle and its impossible for you to get on and off the bike. A proper bike will be setup that you must move forward off your saddle to get a foot on the ground. Impossible with the weride as there's no space for you between saddle and handlebars. The weride in particular also destroys the headset area of your frame and seatpost due to the claps which also don't fit great on oversized headset frames. Be very careful of any brackets scratching carbon frames.

Without doubt, the best child seats are those that fit on the rear as they offer the most protection and support for the kids. BUT, you cannot use any of these on a Full Suspension frame - Hardtails only.

My suggestion is the GIANT Progeny (the one that comes with blue & pink inner & removable cushions) as this one has a 5 point harness, full support bar in front and high backrest. The problem with the latter is that the kids can't wear a helmet as the backrest then pushes their heads forwards. But the seat is so protective that i don't mind the kids not having a helmet until their heads are high enough for the helmet to go above the backrest.

Also, i used to keep a 26" hard tail specifically for riding with this seat but when my son got older and heavier I changed to an 2nd hand 29" hardtail (non carbon). This is also great because once my son progressed on from the rear seat I bought a "Giant Half Wheeler" which he can use up to the age of about 7/8 even though at 6 his now on his own MTB. But when my wife and i want to take him for a longer ride (30 odd km) we still use the half wheeler. And you DON'T want to put these onto a high end Full Sus as you'll destroy your pivot bearings.

My son was in the Giant Seat from about 9 months up to about 3/4 years then moved onto the half wheeler. My daughter of 20 months is now enjoying the Seat and has been since she was about a year old.

I've got something similar bolted to the back of my MTB, used it for my first daughter and now the second one.

Like you said, wearing a helmet becomes a bit of a problem.

On Sunday I went off the tar and onto the pavement for something different and all I heard was her helmet knocking the backrest.

She also tends to fall asleep in it (as did my eldest) and then you land up with a helmet pressed up again your lower back as you ride back home.

My girl was on it since about 8 months. But we were ohhing and ahing about getting it. Basically as soon as the are strong enough to properly hold their heads up. And it goes till 15kg.

Best is when we go down G Spot on the wheel of a slower rider, the klein bliksem adds some pressure with a "Soppas oom!"

Hey guys

Thanks for all the great reviews on the Star Seat. Did you know it’s a 100% South African product? We make it here in Plettenberg Bay. The seat is now available on Takealot and at Sportsmans. We also supply many small bike shops around the country.

The star seat was built to get toddlers involved in the cycle, make them part of the ride. It really does help teach them balance and basic cycling skills. That said, whenever you cycle with a passenger you’ve got to be aware of their limits as well. The back mounted seats are great for putting little ones to sleep, but the Star Seat is all about the fun! It’s a great way to build quality time and keep getting out there once the kids have arrived.

Feel free to call Ritchie, the seat creator, if you have any questions - 073878.9507 or check out the revised website www.starseat.co.za.

We’ve had great feedback from the likes of Stephan Saam and Nino Schurter, who both use and enjoy the seat with their kids.
