I saw the Don at the Blue Lagoon Tri a couple of weeks back but I was too scared to go over and ask to take a selfie with him, he was there just chilling on his phone after the event... :-(

Anyhoo I shared this story with the Caveman at Blue Lagoon too, I told him how he and Tim Don handed my ass to me at my very first triathlon, in my first few hundred meters I looked up to see if I was still on course and they were coming back in!!!!!

Its actually a valid point. We've thought about that, like seriously. Pretty keen on Cozumel, then kicking back for a few days on the beach.

am looking at 70.3 Thailand in 2020. Hook up with some saffa mates and chill.

I'm also in... when do entries open? And does that EL & PE combo deal sell out fast... or do I have time to pull the trigger?

Can anyone give me a rough budget breakdown of the costs involved in doing this all?

I've got a pretty good idea, but don't want too many surprises

Nah, you have plenty of time. Entries rarely sell out, and stay open up to about a month before the race. One thing to keep in mind though is that the entries are cheaper early on and progressively get more expensive. But if in doubt whether you're going to do it, rather wait. (Although you can now defer your entry to the following year should you not be able to do it for whatever reason)

I've got zero Tri-specific stuff... just cycling and running gear.

So obvious ones are Wetsuit, Tri-bars

Flights and accom around those times?

Bike transport?

The accom close to the start/end go pretty quickly. Not sure about the flights; I always drive down with the family. Get yourself a tri bag; pricey, but helps keep everything nice and organised and helps with checking that you have everything. Quite easy to miss something as there are just about a 100 things to pack when going off for a race.

Entry to IM +- 7k

Flights +-3k (including bike transport)

Wetsuit from 3 to 7k

accommodation from 600 per night to as much as you want to spend.

odds an sods a grand.

All in 15k.

My first ironman probably cost me 150k. that was for equipment, and all the other events I entered to be ready.

its not a cheap sport

Tri-suit, either short distance or sleeved tri-suit for longer if you don't want to burn in the sun.... am sure you can pick one of those up ;)

Cycling and running you have, apart from what you listed, so just small stuff to get you through, obviously goggles for the swim and a race belt for ease of wearing and moving your race number around, top tube bag for nutrition.

Plenty of bike transport companies if you are not driving down, costs around R1k

EL + PE combo is worth it with regard to cost saving.

Book flights early if committing to do, same with accommodation.

Entry, flights, accomodation, rental car , bike transport and food.

Ditto for me, every lunch and or dinner was 1k boom gone. We went up on friday morning and cam back tuesday.

Fortunately for me I have family in PE and can drive down. The main cost for me would be entry fees but it was never really about that for me. it was the commitment to training with a young family and work...

But I suppose I have put my big girl panties and suck it up buttercup!

When do entries open?
