Has anyone or does anyone commute to Stellenbosch from Southern Suburbs?

I would love to do it but I am not sure if the routes would be safe. Also not sure which routes to take?

Looks to be around 50km which would add some good miles and would definitely beat driving that highway every day.

A friend of mine did it for 18 months. It took him about  1 1/2 hours each way.  It can be done, but honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. People in the Cape's IQ's drop by at least 50 points when it rains.

never done it before but as a commute you are looking at minimum 3 hours each way...in the dark.

Sheesh, 3hours is 17kph on a pretty flat route. I'd say at least >20kph. Closer to 2 hours IMO. Still as you say it would be largely in the dark and through some iffy areas and dangerous roads.

Personally I wouldn't do it just from a security point of view.

edit: typo.

no chance, either you die ride on the n2 (which is a complete no go) or you have to go past a few really dogdeville areas that we avoid even in groups on weekend rides.

sorry bud but personally wouldn't recommend this ride at all

hahaha as i Said I've never done it before, so that must've been my worst guestimate. Would like to see someone klap in 2 or less hours though, that in peak hour traffic.

If you are from JHB as per your location then you'll probably say we are paranoid after you first attempt.

Did you plot a route already? Share it here & we'll tell you yay or nay.

Used to ride it a million years ago on the odd Sunday club ride. We rode through Pinelands and Thornton to the M7, then down Voortrekker to La Belle and on to Bottelary rd. You'll probably need eyes in the back of your head on the M7 and Voortrekker legs, but there aren't many roads that you don't need those anyway...

That is pretty much the way I thought. I have no idea what the areas along the way are like.

i also wish i could commute to work from Claremont to Stellenbosch but most probably would not make it alive to work, so ya, i also would not attempt it.

Not too rough really. I mean there are a few neighbourhoods I wouldn't aspire to live in, but I definitely wouldn't fear for my life riding that route.

claremont -> rondebosch  -> pinelands -> voortrekker -> bottelary ?

nothing wrong with this route fairly safe from criminals, only worry is motor vehicle traffic coming up from behind you, same as any other road ride just more frequently this time.

If I could make an adjustment substitute for Vootrekker road with Frans Conradie which runs parallel may add a couple of minutes & instead of Bottelary take Polkadraai into Stellenbosch.
