Broke two spokes

Hey guys,

Dusted off the MTB after a few months of giving the roadbike some attention. On a relatively easy 20km, flat ride, 2 spokes on the rear broke violently, as they do. I have a race tomorrow afternoon and getting it repaired, but should I be worried? First time in many years I've had spokes break. Is it common if a bike stands for a while or does my ZTR Crest need rebuilding?

If two spokes broke without any cause, then they've reached their life span limit.  The others WILL all start popping off one after the other.  Get the whole wheel respoked now to avoid a problem in your race.

If on the drive side it is possible that the chain came off at some stage and nicked the spokes.  This causes a weak spot - stress riser - and you can get away with changing the outbound spokes on that side.  If it is on the left side or right inbound spokes it is probably due to fatigue and is best to rebuild the wheel.  Fatigue brakes are normally in the J bend or where the spoke enters the nipple.

was it the spokes or the nipples that popped?

Possible as I live at the coast, but in the image what you're seeing is more likely dust/mud and bad lighting

LBS only had 2 spokes (can't even) and replaced the 2 broken items. Took a chance with the race and almost damn near exactly the same distance, 2 more spokes broke. Decided screw it and finished the race like that. 5th overall with a puncture and 2 broken spokes for half the race, I'll take that.

Wheel is back at the LBS and they are completely rebuilding

hi guys see that all is about spokes here ... so wanted to know what will it cost to replace 1 front spoke on a 29 mtb (merida big nine)? ... will it be possible to replace 1 or do i have to get a new rim?
