David, would these back brake hubs work on a conventional 26er wheel ?

 

We have a shop here in Somerset West that caters for older bikes and have one of these brake type things for R250.

 

But they could not tell me anything about the spoke count needed and if it would work on a mountain bike wheel

The spoke count of the hub needs to match that of the rim. Two common counts for MTB 26” rims is 32 and 36. Sturmey Archer do a variety of these hubs, in both 32 and 36 hole options, single speed, 3 speed, 5 speed:

Find a reputable wheel builder in your area, and let them build it...

Another thing to bear in mind is chain tension. You need a way to adjust your chain tension. If using a MTB frame, chances are the wheel position is not adjustable, which will mean that you’d need some sort of tensioner. There’s a lot of info about chain tensioning in the SS threads...

I'm planning on building one on to my fixie frame... I live riding fixed but with traffic, and roads as they are, I jissr don't have the time to pre empt the braking points like you need to with a fixie..

 

I have a back pedal hub on my beach cruiser and its awesome... I don't plan on riding many hills with the fixie so shouldn't be a problem..

 

Sourcing the hub has been a challenge, but I've managed to find one at westdene cycles thanks to the dude selling a single speed with a coaster brake...

The irony is I was wanting to keep things clean and simple. Like the postmans bike. But on a mountain bike frame. And then cheap.

 

Ummm looks like I will need to add a chain tensioner, which moves away from keeping things "clean". Or buy a SS with vertical drop outs, our buy drop out adapters.

SB, you should be able to get the complete wheel with the brake everything at your local... ooohkay... what to call that....?

 

We have an Indian bloke in our town with a bike/fishing tackle shop who caters for the older/cheaper bikes, and he stocks parts etc. He rebuilt my Red Bike...

 

(He's got a '30's cast iron truing stand... been trying to buy it of him for ages....)

You can still buy cast iron truing stands, I recently did. Not from the 30s though, from China

Slowbee: Coaster hub. Should be around R200. Actually quite a simple device, I’ve stripped and rebuilt many. Unfortunately the good ones (eg Sachs) are hard to find locally. The cheapo ones work OK though. Good luck, they’re good fun.

You can also try an eccentric BB to tension the chain I think. But again these are a bit of a PITA

The first thing to do with a coaster brake is to repack it with either a carbon or bentonite clay grease. Then you won't have the issue of the grease melting out when you inevitably decide to hit the Helderberg main line on it.

 

Also, learn the two wheel drift if you haven't already. You'll need it at some point...

The frame needs to be able to accept an Eccentric BB, can't fit an EBB into a standard BB shell.  They aren't really a PITA if properly set up and properly maintained.

I have a coaster brake wheelset at home.. great fun. did the 94.7 on it, also used it for commuting. 

36 hole with medium profile rim, did fit nicely into my Viner track frame

school boy tricks ........ easy peasy ..... 40 yrs ago. Might put my back out now.

 

The guys at rematch have a Giant branded one for R220. Going to see if they can lace it to the wheelset I have. Just need to take it to them
