Foam Rolling

Works wonders but you should chat with a pilates instructor for tips and tricks and what not-to-do in order to avoid injury. I can highly recommend my wife's studio in JHB (Bryanston) as she specialises in cycling and running athletes.

Keep at it with the ITB - you'll get there and then it's far less painful after each exercise.

Does your better half have a website or contact details?

Question for those who know:

Normally after exercise for no special reason i roll and then stretch

With foam rolling and stretching post exercise, is it better to:

  1. Roll then stretch
  2. Stretch then roll
  3. Whatever

I'm considering getting a foam roller for my knee and lower back.

Seems there's quite a variety of rollers out there. What are you guys using?

Plain old "Black Roll" roller...smooth and hard.

I find the ones with a rough surface or little knobs on them are a bit unpredictable / inconsistent when it comes to applying pressure.

Will this rolling thing help with my outer knee pain (presumably some ITB related stuff) and lower back pain?

I was reading that it's advisable not to roll on the lower back but rather the hips/thighs as the muscles are inter connected.

I also battle with lower back pain on my one side and use a combination of stretching and rolling. Although I would say the stretching is more beneficial for the LBP.

Roll then stretch for sure. Doesn't make sense the other way round. Try stretching a bicycle tube with a few knots in it. Won't stretch nearly as far as a knot less tube. The purpose of foam rolling is to loosen the 'knots'.

Hopefully a cool down spin after your ride

Then gentle roll > gentle stretch > deeper roll > deeper stretch ????????‍♀️

That's interesting.. i have been wondering about that.. almost bought my son a small handheld roller for hockey tour..cause it gets a bit hectic on their bodies...I should've just bought it.

I see they also use those rollers before games/events..is that a practice regularly used?

After sukkeling 100km today with a sore lower back I coincidentally came (a sign...) across these stretches while watching some swimming tips from Dave Scott
