Sram are working on a belt drive with some form of internal gearbox, should see something soon. Could be the way forward (but thats pretty much the point of a drivetrain)

Like Foe said , internal gearbox . Problem is those things at this stage is just to expensive . But they do work very well , had a spin on a external gearbox bike not to long ago and it was awesome .

SRAM made an internally geared hub called the Dual Drive waaaay back.

Here it is on a belt driven bike from Spot (the new owners of Maverick)

So Veloria will you have one on your new ride? to add to that shock that no one can service, soon you will have a bike that only one person in the world can work on, it will be a little like the coca cola formula Foe Fighter2008-06-10 02:52:02

THe idea has some merits.  However, there are a number of considerations.

Firstly, the rear triangle has to be either redesigned or "broken" to allow the belt to go from sprokette to cog.  On a track bike the rear stay will have to be altered.  On a soft tail mtb bike a redesign to allow the chain to come under the rear stay (ie removal of the chain stay and substantial beefing up of the swing arm or chain stay).  Furthermore the length  of the chain stay has to be managed.  A "TRack/BMX type" drop out  has to be considered (or the old 80's style drop up).  On a mtb bike the BB and the rear hub will have to be fixed on the swing arm to keep the distance the same, thus limiting options.

Gearing is not a real problem on MTb as there are "gearbox type hubs available that gives the same gearing options as most drive chains.  (However weight becomes an issue).

Lastly, tubeless may be the way to go on the system because setting up the fanbelt tension will always be an issue, so changing tubes and tyres may be an issue.  (if it is not an an issue a single speed derailler may work )

Konafan look at the design on the current Santa ' date=' Morewood and Raleigh MTB's and you see what you looking for .[/quote']

Precisely what I had in mind DR

I like teh order you put them in. Obviously from best to worst.  Wink

the only problem will be with chain stay length, the santa, raleigh and morewood all pivot infront of the BB and not at the BB thus making chain length dynamic.  Either the pivots system will have to be adapted or a SS derailer with a strong spring will have to be used to mantain fanbelt tension
