Fixing up a GT Ruckus UF

'twas bestowed upon me, a GT Ruckus UF - from what I can deduce via Google image search it appears to be a 2008 one. However all is not well with this bike, a lot of work is needed. So I am here to ask the question, should I fix it or junk it?

Currently what is needed :
Brake adapters
Brake set
Tubes (or should I tubeless it?)

Bottom Brack
Crankset

I have a SRAM GXP NX Crankset with BB but not having a clue about these types of bikes I am not sure of they take threaded BBs like the one I have.

LBS says I can get a Tektro brackset for R1200 and the adapters should be about R100 each.

Any advice will be appreciated. Do these use normal BBs? What are they worth if running?

Nice jump/play bike.

I would keep it for mucking about on and learning bunnyhops etc.

What fork do you have on it? You can get away with only a rear brake, get a entry level Shimano brake from somewhere, it will be fine.

It will be a standard 68/73 threaded BB. They are quite cheap. I would again say try to fit Shimano Deore crank and BB. Or whatever else you can get your hands on.

There is no point in going tubeless.

Thanks, that is somewhat encouraging to know, I'll try to get the crank and BB I have onto the bike, at least it can ride then. I am looking into brake sets, that seems to be the biggest expense I am facing here.

Keep an eye out in the classifieds. Always good deals coming up. You don't need anything high end for the Ruckus.

Pic up a set off the classifieds. Seen some decent Avids etc for about R500. As much as people hate on them, they decent brakes, good modulation and stopping power and hey this is not your everyday trail slaying machine, its a fun project and probably not a back you want to feel sorry about because you scratched the lever or your bars.

For that matter, get all the parts you need off the classifieds.

Stay tubes and just run a higher pressure. Tubeless sealant needs to be kept fresh and ridden, and too much of a mission for this kinda thing.

I've got a GT Ruckus DJ frame also prob 2008 thats my play bike.

Classifieds actually quite empty at the moment, just checked. Give it a week or so and keep a close eye out.

Those cheap shimanos will likely irritate you. I got some 180mm rotors to help the stop power.

Found a SLX set, I know it is overkill but I love the SLX brakes on my MTB. They are only a little bit more than what the LBS want for an entry level Tektro set so I am keen on getting them.

First time seeing a patch job like this

I washed it, removed the crank arms, wheels and seatpost. Binned the crank, tubes and tyres and cleaned the rest up. Fitted the used SLX brake levers and soon as I find caliper mounts I'll finish the brakes. Getting a 36mm wrench tomorrow to remove the old BB. I'll take pics as it progresses.

More snaps of bits

The history of the bike is some years ago it was left behind by a cable thief who made a run for the bushes upon seeing the owner of the land approaching. After hours of trying to find the bugger they gave up and took his bike. Kind of ironic justice. So these "patches" makes sense.

Being that time of the month I think I'll only use the rear SLX brake on the bike and sell the front one. As some have pointed out you really only need a rear brake on bikes like these.

The LBS got back to me and the remaining parts I need, tyres, seatclamp, rear caliper mount all adds up to just under R700. Adding the cost of the tubes and pedals I got yesterday and I may just be able to get this on the road again for just under a grand.
