Bicycling Magazine Loss of Values

Agreed - it's all about the balance. Given that we have knowledge of only 1 issue with the colourful language we don't really have enough info to say whether the magazine should have responded or not...

Either way - I'm fairly certain this was a one off with the fbomb/middle finger being "cool" and in line with the character of the story - I don't reckon we'll see another fbomb any time soon.

That's a reasonable response, and a fair conclusion - certainly based on the absence of moral outrage to the poor folk at Bicycle mag over the months and years.  Fair to say they probably just paddle their canoe along gentle and inoffensive waters.

But then read the thread title again.  Quite a leap, no?  Apparently the publication has lost is values, and we are potentially faced with a moral degradation that threatens the very fabric of society.  Yawn!

Yeah a SA forum where most understand Afrikaans very well...but okay spin it that way if you please.

But you aren't answering my other question.. now that you know that they did in fact put on a warning do you still insist on them printing an apology?

Methinks you caught OP in a jam here.  High horses are hard to get down from.  Let's see...

Well that is just confusing.[emoji848]

Its interesting to see such opposing studies. It's happening quite often that someone will quote a study when said study has several similar studies with contradictory results!

Quoting myself to add that even I was unaware of the opposing study to the "potty mouth people are more honest" subject!

I learn new stuff every day!

I still don't know what a bogan is...

My best guess is a dodgy 4 wheeled sled that you ride down a steel track at the back of CWC.

For sure. I might agree with Jan's moral compass but I don't agree with his words!

It is a trash Australian... Here is a song. It is funny and explains generally what a bogan is;

I did not see it, as my magazine was water damaged. The delivery guys keep throwing it in the front yard, in stead of in the suitable letter box. About this,  I have complained in writing more than once and they have replaced the damaged magazine, but again threw it on the paving this month and the spine and back was smudged. I was not going to bring this up in the thread, as it would have seemed like I am just fetching another stick to beat with. So no, I did not see it.

So the swearing could easily have been missed, but the double "zap" caught my attention, offended and was not  what I wanted to see in my Bicycling magazine. The editor can decide what direction he wants to take with the magazine. An apology would show that he agrees that a line was crosses and that it won`t happen again, or no response and/or clarification and the paying customer must make up his/her own mind.

Heavens, it must be a hard world to live in.  The humanity!  There's a cycling bracelet that might help you - it was mentioned earlier in the thread!

Why does the double zap offend you more than their failure to respond - while I don't believe the double zap is appropriate in a cycling magazine at all - the fact that they fail to respond to a legitimate issue just smacks of incredible arrogance.... usually that just leads to them going out of business in the end.

Maybe send them a few mails about that too... mike.finch@media24.com - with a link to this thread.

Seriously? About as much arrogance as expecting a reply to something as trivial as a photo of people's fingers.  And now you want to raise it with higher ups because a response wasn't forthcoming?  Perspective.  Lets try to find some, non?  People are getting shot on their bikes, but hey, lets all write some strongly worded letters to media24 to protest the OUTRAGE of no response.  Sad (in my opinion!!)

One swallow does not a summer make OP.

They took a couple of liberties that were in keeping with the theme of that particular article.

I don't think it's going to ruin your kids, you could simply talk it through with them. 'Some people think this type of thing is cool, we don't.

So sure, you have a right to be upset and an editor should concern himself with what a subscriber thinks. Even if he doesn't think that person's complaint is justified.

The editor's lack of response is puzzling, but it could be that he is simply away/on holiday.
