Spellcheck and punctuation is your friend ;)

cSixx make some pretty amazing carbon rims, and you can order with their hubs or a set of Hope 4s. It would be my first choice if I was looking at carbon rims - local, great warranty, good looking, stiff, and as carbon rims go they are well priced.

If you want to go alu there are tons of options, I'd always go for a set of Hope Pro 4 hubs paired with one of the following rims:

- Lyne (value for money)

- Spanks (strong but heavy)

- Stans Flow/Arch (depending on your weight)

Wheels roll fast. Wheel is a system of which the tyre is a component.

Rolling resistance, which determines how fast a wheel rolls, is almost exclusively caused by the tyre.

And that tyre is supported by a rim and the rim by spokes and the spokes by a hub.

Bearing quality, spoke tension rim stiffness all determine how the wheel rolls unless you like your cycling in straight lines on infinitely smooth surfaces. Tyre hysteresis is the big one but all the others play a big part in keeping the system together so that it can roll in the first place.

But let my finish my pap and then we can roll up our sleeves neh

and bearings have no bearing on the performance of a wheel system?

Of course they do, as does rim flex. But that is not rolling resistance.

But yes, overall wheel performance is determined by many things (as pointed out). Rolling resistance is determined primarily by the tyre.

But yes, overall wheel performance is determined by many things (as pointed out). Rolling resistance is determined primarily by the tyre.

How that tyre behaves is also influenced by the rim. Remember the rim deforms and that infouences the contact patch which affects rolling resistance.

Hence with tyre RR tests they always use the same wheel for similar types of tyre.

Primarily is right word. When shopping for wheels though we have to consider the influence of the whole system.

Example : I can feel my Easton EA90SLX lose speed through tight twisty bends compared to the same tyre at the same pressure on my Ksyrium SLR. The rim is much more flexy in the EA90SLX and there’s more influence on the tyre as a result. The ksyrium SLR carries speed much better.

Then there’s the matter of the better hubs.

So optimize what you have with a tyre at the right pressure.

Starting with new wheels then start with a better wheel.

When it comes to wheels there are a boat-load of options.

Issues to consider carefully include, but aren't limited to:

  • Your budget
  • Intended purpose of the wheels
  • Target wheel set weight and rim width
  • Personal colour or brand preference
  • The axles specific to fork and frame - QR, 100x15 thru, 135xQR, 142x12 etc
  • The freebodies you need - Shimano, SRAM xD, Campagnolo
  • etc.

For MTB:

Hubs:

  • DT Swiss 350 or 240
  • Hope Pro4
  • ECC Components

Rims:

  • WTB, Spank, Raceface (alloy)
  • South Industries, cSixx (carbon)
  • Chinese imports - Light Bicycle, Nextie, XM CarbonSpeed, Yuan An

For road:

  • Mostly off-the-shelf sets or carbon options from China
