Shifter cable housing

Hi guys

 

I am putting new shifter cables on the bike, and would like to make them fully enclosed, rather than partly exposed as they are at the moment.

 

I read somewhere that one can drill out the side of the cable guide with the small hole, so that the cables can pass through completely.

Anyone done this? Tips, do's and donts?

Why are some cables partly exposed in the first place?

If  I do, what's the best way to hold the cables tight?

just dont ...its tooo early to explain bicycle frame design and cable tension ,they are that way for a reason

Check out Jagwire, they make cable attachments so that you do not have to "drill". Don't drill....Try it first and see if it works. Often you will find that there is a problem with the routing / tension especially on the FD (if you have one). There are some seat post attachments etc to overcome this problem however. Do some research, look at some options and try.

I replaced my rear derailleur shifter housing a while ago with fully enclosed housing and attached cable housing to frame using cable ties ,works great no problems up to this point regarding gear shifting might not look the best but very effective would recommend.I ride a giant carbon xtc29.I would first go this "route"first before starting to drill and remove cable housings.

I've done it on two of my old bikes.  I don't see why not to do it - it keeps the cable clean and working well.  Sharp drill bit, go slowly, make sure the drill head isn't rubbing on anything, don't go too slowly or the drill bit will bite in too deep.  All the basics of drilling really.

I just took the ends out which would normally hold the housing in place, so the complete housing ran through the same place - no additional securing needed and it looked completely normal.

1. If you're running a front derailleur, make sure you leave the last cable stop intact if the mech itself doesn't have a cable stop.

 

2. Use a dremel or a needle file, the angles on a drill are all wrong and you'll most likely end up making a mess or breaking the bit. Maybe both if you're lucky.

 

Other than that it's about the simplest upgrade you can do on a MTB.

That reminded me - I got most of the material out with a drill, then used a needle file to neaten it up.

Why not rather just use an extra piece of housing and remove the outer black part then put the inner part between the section of stops you want to close up

Because the cable stops are exactly what causes the extra friction you're trying to get rid of. A one piece housing alleviates this. Look on an old frame and you will actually see the wear marks in the stops where he inner cable has rubbed.

Pity Gore Ride-on cables are not available any more. They were the best. Still have some on one of my bikes.

Also because it's not sealed then - you've still got the gaps between the sections of outer where the outside world can get in.
