How could they put someone in a seat he'd paid for? I'd have a melt down too if that happened to me :-(

I gather it's normally in the fine print in the T&C's, only one body per seat. And if a body does not show up for the extra seat, it's a no-show, and the airline can fill that seat with a stand-by if they want to. Otherwise we would all buy 3 x discount economy seats for long haul and stretch out in a make-shift lie-flat.

But I don't have the days and high powered magnifying glasses to read through the fine print myself to verify that.

I lot lies in the facts of the story as well.  If the person booked two seats and mentioned to the airline he is paying for an extra seat that should remain open and they accepted the transaction then they should honour it.  If he booked two seats and put a name on the seat that did not show up for the flight then it is in the airlines right to put another person in his seat.  Also if you are flying with an infant your seat is already reserved for you as there are special seats earmarked for people flying with infants (those seats have extra oxygen masks).  So if the man booked his seat on one of those then they will also have to override him

I wonder, I have certainly encountered some... umm ...extra large units that surely needed 2 seats and casivac often will take up to 6 seats between stretcher and medics so there must be some leeway.

So this tale is very interesting indeed. In fact it started at the check in counter when my wife and I dropped off our luggage. The mom was at the counter next to us, and the service agent asked for the child's unabridged birth certificate. She mumbled something about not knowing, and blah blah blah. The service agent then called for supervisor assistance.

My wife and I moved on to the security check-in and passport control. Shortly thereafter, mom arrives in the queue behind us. Again, she gets to the passport desk beside me, and then the Emigration agent also requests her baby's unabridged birth certificate, to which mom responds that she is not aware what they are talking about. Emigration tells her that she was not meant to be allowed past check-in, to which she says they did not say anything....

Fast forward to boarding the flight, and guess who steps on-board and promptly gets bumped to business class? The fact my wife was 7 months pregnant at the time meant nothing to the flight crew.

I flew from Swaziland to JHB on airlink once, and when I boarded there were to anties sitting next to one another on the 2-seat row. Let's just say the seats were really not wide enough. They both needed seatbelt extenders to clasp in. Once seated and sorted, the one was leaning to the left into the aisle, and the other was leaning to the right pushed up against the window.

They were seated over the wing, and I can only imagine it was to get the C.G. balanced...

Funny thing is the flight was not even half full, so I am sure they could have been given separate seats, but they chose to stick it out and clack all the way to Jozi.

I see SAA is doing a few repatriation flights.  Family friends of ours are currently on a SAA A340-600 on the way back from Brisane to JHB.  I noticed these three aircraft going to Accra which I am pretty sure is also repatriation flights.  Surely it would have been cheaper to fire up a A340-600 than to send three A319 aircraft to do the same job.

Parents of friends of ours are also heading back on that flight after a 3 month stay courtesy of lockdowns. They had to wait for a direct flight to happen as they are only SA permanent residents, so no other country would take allow them to transit.
