Gary I understand why you would ask for this ^

Should the energy not be focused at altering driver behaviour?

Should we not be focusing on creating cycling infrastructure rather than retreating into our living rooms and the virtual world of Tacx, Rouvy, Zwift and the like?

As cyclist we fight for our lives every time we sling our legs over out bikes on a public road. Retreating does not win the battle.

Does anyone have stats on how many cyclists have been involved in fatal or serious MVA's in 2018 and Jan 2019 to date?

Hey there Diesel.

I hear you and I would really like to agree with you 100%. However, I have been riding all types of bicycles for close on 50 years and, from what I can see, changing driver behaviour or instilling some kind of mutual respect between different road users is just not going to happen without proper law enforcement and a serious change in everyone's attitude. And, at the moment, I just can't see proper law enforcement or an attitude change happening. Further, I can't see our Municipality being proactive and implementing any of the other excellent solutions suggested like separate cycle paths/tracks, etc. Therefore, based on this, I personally would like to suggest and encourage other cyclists in Durban to think twice before using the M4 in future. Doing so may not be worth the risk...

When $$$ allow I'm getting a carbon fat bike for beach missions.

Risk a spark plug sinker or two to the head but that's a chance I'll take.

Apparently there was a following car who the taxi overtook so it could then take the offramp, and in his haste he drove into the cyclists. Basically its driver impatience!!
No chance of changing that sort of behaviour so the best alternative is to have cycling lanes far away from cars!!

RIP.....

We have a big problem with some taxi drivers...some of them actually target cyclist.

We had a really close encounter on the 9 December 2018...you can see in the video how the taxi driver came into our lane... almost bumped 3 of us and turned back into his lane...if you riding in Durban and see a taxi registration number NUZ 3612...beware.

RIP and condolences to the friends and family left behind. I sincerely hope that the driver is prosecuted to the full extent of the law and that justice is served.

The problem with the majority of taxis is that the boss wants X rand a day/week/month. Anything that the driver/conductor make over and above that is theirs hence the urgency and disregard of any laws/road rules just to get the next fair and if that means jumping one car in traffic to get there 1 second before the next guy, then f*ck everyone else.

Only way to change that behavior would be to have a miraculous overnight change in mindset and the instillation of compassion for fellow road users or to introduce a flat rate salary for the day regardless of the commuter count, neither of which seem likely.

Personally I choose to try and stay as far away from them as I can.

Not to derail the thread but it is all drivers.

On our drive from Pretoria to PE over December, 8pm at night and I drove past at least 3 or 4 cars on the N1 with no lights, zero!!!!

Condolences to the family, I don't know the area but have seen the M4 mentioned in many accidents. I would avoid it at all costs personally.
