Shimano XTR Please help!!

Recommended Posts

I have Shimano XTR and from day one have been having serious issues with it. Someone please help!

I have 11-42 with 32 Absolute black oval front chainring.

The issue is that the chain keeps climbing off the lower derailer wheel and sits between the wheel and the casing. It is dificult to notice on gravel rides and now the side of the cage is almost worn through.

It is a 1 x setup on a Momson ali 629 but I am now at the point that I want to throw the Shitmano in the bin.

Why does this happen, it typically happens when riding in the 12 or the 11.

The chainline seems correct. When in the middle of the casette the chainline is straight.

What to do, can you get the inner cage plate separately? It is going to be needed soon as it will be worn through in the next 2 or 3 rides.

Derailer wheels have no excessive ware.

Chainring has 250km
Casette has 800km
chain has 120km

Please help!!!

Is the derailleur / hanger / cage  not bent? Sounds like it's ever so slightly out of alignment. If it were SRAM, I'd ask if the narrow/wide teeth (yes, SRAM 1x RD's have narrow/wide pulleys) as if they're out of sync the chain won't engage properly.

I had a ride with an oke last Sunday. He also rides XTR.

He also fitted an Absolute Black oval ring (34t).

We had to stop 4 times because his chain had climbed off the bottom jockey wheel. His derailleur cage is also substantially damaged from the rub caused by the chain.

As an aside it was doing it with the Shimano 32 round as well.

Most unsatisfactory.

Will get photos later, but everything is aligned / straight etc. It has been to 2 bike shops already with no resolution.

It is almost as if the chain is too slack and a bounce in the trail makes it jump out.

I have checked chain length and replaced the chain. I have also shortened the chain yesterday. I took out 2 full links to no avail.

I had A similar issue ages ago with an old XX 10spd derailer ( pre clutch era) it kept jumping off the bottom pulley and it seemed the gap was very big between  the cage so we drilled a hole in the spot below and put a tiny screw and nut in to clamp the cage more tightly

never had a chain drop again , it might work for you,,,,, but its tedious to do

From the pics it looks like the chain has been routed through the cage incorrectly.

This. Can you take a side-on pic of the whole cage? Seems the chain is on the wrong side of that tab in the middle of the cage.

+1 from me.

It isn't that clear but it looks like the chain is on the wrong side of the little tab between the derraileur wheels.

I see the tab, but if it runs in front of the tab the chain will wear through it quickly. 5413c820faa536223085624a6385b1d9.jpga9de4717ecdf326591380f7b15460b79.jpg5eb3b8cc8dee1b06a39743846f911e90.jpgd6284cc97c44daa747853fdec4e1e553.jpg

Chain is routed correctly, so what's next?

I am clutching at straws here, maybe two things to check.

Is the clutch engaged? My mate always forgets to re-engage his. Also, is the chain directional and if so is it in the right direction.

I wouldn’t expect either of these two things to result in your issue, but may as well check everything.
