Due to illness, a friend of mine can no longer ride and gifted me his mountain bike. He only did about 150km on it and only on tar so its still fairly new. The steed in question is a Cronus Discesa 29R.

A trawl of the interwebs was not very informative.

Two questions:

- Has anyone heard of this brand/model and is it any good? (Im purely an entry level recreational rider)

- Is it worth keeping?

Muchas gracias.

This is the bike you mentioned

These are some of the others I found

Then there was also this nifty little ebike from Eurobike 2016

So its not complete rubbish.

Some gravel grinding, commuting or occasional recreational rides should be fine.

Also anything you got for free is worth keeping. In this case its probably not worth selling either.

But, if its your gateway drug to the wonderful bottomless pit of spending that is mountain biking then welcome! Ride the bike and let us know.

Thanks for the reply.

Its identical to the 1st image.

Tomorrow Im going to check brakes & tyre pressures, adjust seat etc to fit my rippling physique [emoji57] and then go for a decent ride to get a feel for it. Im interested to see how it compares to my trusty GT. Maybe worth using to rack up training km’s? Im entered for my 1st race end of April... [emoji1695]

So a week and 84km later I have the following to report:

The bike is fitted with entry level Shimano gears (21 speeds) which do the job well enough. Shifts are smooth and easy.

Zoom mechanical disc brakes, these needed adjustment but once done stop just fine.

Tyres are El Cheapo 57-622’s, nothing fancy.

Zoom front suspension, Lasco SUV crankset and Giant Axact 9W computer round off the equipment. So all in all entry level spec. The frame seems well made and finished if a little heavy. Clean welds and neat paint job.

On the road it handles nicely, and after a bit of experimentation with the bars and seat is a pretty comfortable fit for 20km+ rides.

Overall not too bad considering it was mahala. I’m already shopping for another bike, I have my eye on a GT or possibly a Merida at the lbs.

As for this one, I’m gonna hang on to it....

ENJOY the bike.

Thousands of commuters puts thousands of kilometers on bikes like these year in and year out.  This bike is PERFECT for getting you back in shape, and more importantly, to figure out YOUR type of riding .... so that when you do take out that second bond it may hopefully be spent on the correct type of bike for your needs.

PS - do consider some sort of heart rate monitor, purely for record keeping purposes.  looking back over the last three years it is mind boggling to see the improvement in my health !!  And thanks to the bike computer I can actually accurately track what worked.  Due to the number of hills around here I opted for a computer with a heart rate and cadence monitor - becomes interesting figuring out the best gearing and cadence for hills, that get you to the top with red lining your heart rate.

Update....

Still have the Cheapo, not given any problems and its been running well.

I rode my first race recently on it, all went well although I was a little sore after.

This week I upgraded and got myself a Scott. So far I’m really happy with it. I’m currently averaging between 90 - 110 km a week and I am hooked. [emoji476][emoji2189]

Pictures of the new bike please, on the couch if possible.
