Good day, I have been training with a well renowned coach to improve my cycling from beginner to intermediate level.... I just want to find out who do you guys look to, to improve your cycling ... Or is it self taught and own methods...

I rode for fun at first until I started setting some goals. I would just ride whenever, with no goals and go all out, which was breaking me down after some time... Had to be off from training for a few weeks.

Now that I have more time to train and training for something specific, I decided to sign up for a coaching programme and it has had tremendous impact on improvement. The key is riding at various intensities on different days. The recovery days are true testers of discipline - to not go faster even if you feel you can. Now I also train even if I don’t feel like it, but the outcome is continuous improvement so I keep myself motivated more easily.

This works for me now because I have a clear goal. It would not have worked when I was just riding for the sake of riding - it was more an escape from other commitments so I didn’t need another.

What type of training ?

Skill for MTB ?

Road race training ?

Last year our 7 year old went for skills training with a school coach.  This coach later arranged two sessions with well known MTB coaches.  YES, this was aimed at the 7 year old ... but man, I learnt a LOT !

If I wanted anything more than weekend rides I would surely enroll for more skills training !!

Looking at the other extreme - a friend got a professional coach, and spent nearly two years training, and did the 2018 full Ironman in a very good time !!

So depending on your goals and dreams, get the training that will get you there.

Exactly - 2 years of training. One can’t expect to reach high goals with just a 12-week programme...

Anyone recommend a coach in the East Rand Area for intermediate+ cyclist. I am looking to build form and fitness as well as going next level.

a coach can be anywhere in the world these days, unless you want one on one sessions which is going to cost you.

They don't have to live close to you.

True - Noted - any suggestions?

Think I have some bad habits and a repeat offender my training program seems to be all over the place - need clear structure to work towards a clear goal. This winging it seems to cause more harm than good - I either get injured over training or am not making any gains...
