Dogs Posted February 28, 2019 Share There are plenty tips / advise in below threads. For this year, cold would be a bigger factor with race now in May - it can get freezing cold in the early hours just before and after sunrise. Flex / stretch your hands and fingers regularly. Leave something in the tank for the last 80k's. Water points have more than enough eats and drinks. Enjoy! https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/144531-the-36one-mtb-challenge/?hl=36one https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/166321-event-the-36one-mtb-challenge/?hl=36one https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/168087-event-the-36one-mtb-challenge-2018/?hl=36one https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/175550-event-the-36one-mtb-challenge-2019/?hl=36one

I battled with knee pain from early on and reckon it was partly due to the cold. Focus this year will be to try and keep them warm from the start....and try and finish in daylight. Knersboy Posted March 14, 2020 Share Okay so my first one, suitably afraid. Seen no chatter about 2020 yet, I might as well get it started. If it gets cancelled I am gonna be miffed, but for now gaaning aan. My biggest uncertainty is about keeping warm/cool with the temperature swings. I figure at the first checkpoint, at 99km this year, I will don my full Spider-Man suit. I get cold easy and don’t like being cold. For cold and dry I am sorted. I am hoping for the best and that we will have a dry race. I am aiming for 24-26 hours. My biggest concern is stage 3. Reckon I will leave CP2 early in the morning, still cold and dark, full Spider-Man going strong, I won’t be able to survive with a short sleeve jersey, arm warmers and rain cape. My concern is Rooiberg. If I get there after sunrise I am gonna cook. Full Spider-Man is a lot of kit. I don’t plan to ride with a camelbak, I don’t dig it. But I reckon it may be worth putting on an empty camelback at checkpoint two, just to put Spider-Man suit in and keep cool. Any tips from the experienced guys around temperature management? Dicky DQ Posted March 15, 2020 Share Knee warmers (Not leg warmers), arm warmers, buff, gillet should get you sorted. If not borrow a newspaper to put under gillet and long gloves. All these things you can take off and stow in your pockets if it gets hot.

I get cold easily, if it is less than 10 deg and dark I run full leg warmers, thermal socks, long sleeve merino base layer, soft shell jacket/jersey with wind stopper chest, long gloves and ear warmer thingy. Used this at Baviaans last year and was still sometimes cold.I have no idea of what my pace is going to be like, difficult to predict with an event like this. Reckon I will make the call at checkpoint 2, and make sure I pack the boxes to cover the two scenarios.

hboli4 Posted March 16, 2020 Share Time to shift focus...will take this week easy and then focus training on Trans and ramp up from there for 36one in November. Just moved my accommodation dates as well - got lucky on that with no penalties. Yeah, reckon we might cook. Or have rain and cool weather. This is turning out to be a popular weekend. Velouria Posted March 16, 2020 Share Lets hear from guys that have some advice and willing to share with first timers: *Training is going to plan.*Nutrition is coming together. What to expect after 15 hours of riding is what eludes me?If you can master 6 hours on a bike, you can master 15, or 18 or 24. It's about getting into a routine and rhythm that's sustainable. And the 36One is perfect for this. The waterpoints and check points are just far enough apart that as soon as you feel your legs fading, there is an oasis of magic. If you ride a smooth and consistent pace, and eat and drink regularly, you can ride for days. Think of this during the first 120kms... hboli4

Knersboy Posted March 17, 2020 Share November should be warm enough. Yap, don’t reckon full Spider-Man will be required anymore. Miffed after all the training, but it is a first world problem and I have gotten over it. The big bag of sweeties I ate last night after the last few weeks of abstaining helped. JohanDiv Posted October 27, 2020 Share I see entries are now closed. I have to go pick up something in Calitzdorp that Sunday, thought I might as well do The Half for fun since I'm going that way... Anybody know if subs are allowed and maybe have an entry they want to get rid of?
hboli4 Posted October 27, 2020 Share Sorry don't know about subs but I'm pretty sure Dryland will assist - can't see that they are sold out as such. Last big(for me) week of training - just keep going next week and then race week. What will the weather do??? JohanDiv
LuckyLuke Posted October 27, 2020 Share Just call dryland, they sometimes help with extra entries after they closed JohanDiv
