Steel frame advice

is a belt drive really worth it in the long run .... and if I recall correctly they then also introduce friction into the system vs what a conventional chain system would...... if memory serves, the Sherifffff once outlines his experience with the two drive trains and noted the chain system to "feel" more efficient and smooth.

Apparently belt drives introduce 2% more friction than chain system if memory serves.

That said - it's a moot argument really - if you're going belt then either you're running single speed which makes friction irrelevant because you're dumb enough to want to ride a single speed :-) or  if you go gears you have to go internal gearing which introduces even more friction so friction is clearly not important to you.

Why the discussion on a belt drive when the OP has said he want to build a gravel bike that will need gears!!

Belt drive for SS only  :offtopic:

I'm not 100% sure you can run a tapered fork on there even with an external bearing.

I'm pretty (but not certain) sure the MCR was stopped before a 44mm head tupe was introduced.

IMHO if you're going to go the 29er to gravel route, get a 26er (440mm) rigid fork. It pulls the Geo more in line and stops the bike from looking tall.

Advice for the OP - muck about with Cane Creeks old bike headset finder to see what is available:

ok and thanks for the info... so is a geared hub, much like the rohloff

I see they using the alfine hub in the spec

Personally like you, not a fan of cutting a frame for the sake of being different.... especially a Niner !!

Thanks guys

And to throw a curve ball what about a rigid fork, drop bars and some long gears as a comfortable road/gravel bike?

Way ahead of that curve ball of yours, was my weapon of choice at Gravel Grand Prix at Verkykerskop last year...

Hi Hubbers

I been looking at building up a 29er steely for the local trails. I have come across a Niner MCR9 frame. Want to know your opinions on this frame? Does anyone know if I can run a tapered fork? Whats the geometry like for trail riding/ climbing?

Thanks

I saw the article a short while ago and my brain exploded :-)

I've always wanted to turn my CYA Niner into a geared belt bike but it's carbon so the cut frame fix above was not possible.

The plan is 11 speed Di2 Alfine system. I'd like the Rohloff system but daaaamn that is big money for an extra 100% range and a couple of grams saving...

Thanks guys. Definitely not going belt drive. Actually keen to keep it simple as possible. Only have the frame for now so its gonna be a long build process. Super excited and I will let everyone know how it goes.

There is a man named Ryan who lives in your parts, used to hang out here but hasnt been around in a while.
