Taxi takes out a driver, what happens next???

For sure, and obviously this is part of the imagination land we are all going to pretending there are no taxis around... But it seems everyone would like to get rid of them, but no one is taking into consideration what would happen if they weren't around...

Look at LA... Fantastically first world, but I've heard traffic is an absolute abortion... Egypt, same story, Rome, Turkey... There are a while bunch of more civilised cultures that have no minibus taxis, and their traffic system is beyond a nightmare.

They're not pleasant, theyre infuriating, and they're downright dangerous to most people inside and out, but, they're still transporting a massive percentage of people who would have to otherwise be on the road.

I still can't believe our population hasn't gone the way of places like Vietnam... I would wager that a motorcycle/scooter is so much more accessible to the man just coming out of, or trying to get out of poverty, and securing freedom of movement, but with cars being the massive status symbol they are, most would rather use a taxi until they've saved enough for the car... Pity, really...

On your last point about scooters/motorcycles even busses. I joked once with our domestic that I was going to take her home on my scooter, she nearly shat herself there and then!

So yep there's that....

I assume you haven't had to drive near the Golden arrow busses? If you think taxis are bad, wait until the vehicle is 4 times larger....

Have done plenty of times.

But its safer to ride in a bus, than in a taxi

If everyone will have to start crawling in the yellow lane during peak  hour to prevent the taxis to come racing past. It is the only way unfortunately seeing as traffic police cant do anything about it. But just drive in the taxi lane when you not supposed to, then you get issued a fine. Why cant those cameras be used to capture the yellow lane speedsters?

On the topic of incompetent lawless traffic police, I'm sharing 2 events this week:

Early this week, think Tuesday?, a car stopped at a red robot and passed through safely. A police officer from an adjacent road turned their lights on, followed them, pull them over.

This morning, the same light was green for me - mr lawless traffic officer who comes out of the exact same road the exact same time, drives into the red interchange, taking a left.

Police think they are above the law. They are just taxi drivers with badges. No opinions will change my mind based on my experience thus far.

I have to disagree with you there, I don't think it's that high at all. I would say most of those who use taxi's don't own cars.

I fully agree with our other points though of who the bosses are.

Spoke to a guy once who worked for Toyota, he said he never booked the taxi's in for services. The bosses only brought their Prado's and Land Cruisers in for servicing.

Although improbable and unlikely, but even 20 well managed cars and attentive lawful drivers are better than 1 taxi that stops to make a u turn over a solid line. I agree and also doubt it would be that high, but at the same time, I would be cycling to work and not driving a car if that was the case. +1 -1, it can still be relatively the same!

I did not bother checking the user out, but from his comments on the video, he has "wit baas" mentality, so I would not be surprised.

Nor did I, so maybe I'm missing crucial contributions, but where does the "wit baas" come from? The article says an English person, but now my culture and language is being slandered into the mix.

Not sure why you love taxi's so much. It may very well be that your circumstances make for pleasant taxi experiences, but suggesting other's opinions that state the opposite are misinformed, is misinformed in itself.

A month ago a (speeding) bus nearly clipped my elbow and handlebar in my suburb. I chased down the bus and civilly confronted the driver. I asked them to please keep a larger distance as they almost hit me and the air vortex created by the bus pulled me into the road. So yes, I have also experienced close calls with busses, but even these events are nothing compared to the majority awful, unlawful and evil experiences I've had with taxi's and their drivers.

If you have good experiences with taxi's, well colour me impressed, I'm truly happy for you! In fact, even somewhat jealous. However I ask that you do not undermine the many valid opinions and unpleasant experiences recalled by other users.

I've had my fair and normal share of horrible taxi experiences... All I'm trying to say is that we tend to paint them all with the same brush, and we always tend to see ourselves above others... If we take a quick shortcut or read an sms while driving, bah, "I know what I'm doing..." Mr taxi driver does it and we lose our collective ****...

As I've stated too, while they're horrendous, they do also prevent a far more horrendous situation on our poorly managed road system... One that is starting and soon to swell.. A load of people who are now earning enough to have a car, are on the road in their car instead of a taxi, and have only been exposed to taxi driving... It's a very very scary future with this in mind.

Anyway, clearly I've been bad at making my point, so I'll excuse myself at this point...

My take on SA "transport" systems then down to vehicles and taxis is to try and grasp that we are African and the general traffic "systems" that exist in Africa will continue to extend into SA. Expecting some sort of positive action from government is like expecting to have the power of an ebike or Burry Stander without training. It is not impossible but very unlikely.

I do not believe this is negative but realistic. The tide will not be held back.

Yes and no. It all depends on how serious the traffic police gets. The difference starts there. People will start to notice and will behave will driving. Also government  should allow dash cam footaage of transgressors and issue appropriate fines. I also think that fines should at least double.
