Sram Eagle NX rant & rave

Dont think they will admit. but check if the washers you have left are exactly the same or if one has a bigger hole in it. If it does then it is in the wrong place.

Unfortunately no washers left. Most was lost in the grass. Only discovered the screw in my bakkie... One does not think to check this specifically. The strangest is that the gears still changed perfectly during the warm-up and the pulley only came flying when I really pushed some power down.

I'm leaning more heavily toward incorrect reassembly. I think quagga might be right in that the washers were improperly replaced.

Look at the washers from the bottom pulley the one you still have.

They should be same. If one has a bigger hole then you KNOW they stuffed up. If they are the same then there is still a chance but you can not prove it then

Rave: it works.

Rant: it doesn’t last. Jockey bolt broke off. Jockey is lost in the veld. Another case I am aware of is the cage broke off completely and had to be replaced.

Does anybody else have similar issues?

I've personally seen with my own eyes this happen to two 1x12 GX cages and one 1x12 XO1 in the space of two weeks.

And a friend of mine saw it happen to one of his riding buddies GX last weekend, and apparently the bikeshop he took it to told him they are aware of around 50 similar cases.

At least his insurance paid him out no questions asked.

There appears to be a missing metal dust cover/washer. there should be two of those lipped washers shown in the pic between the pulley wheel and the cage plate.

the bolt thread also looks damaged as the 2nd thread seems to have been flattened or partially stripped.

those bolts don't need to be tighter than 3N.m if thread lock is used as specified in the service instructions

There are two - one is still on the jockey/pulley thingy ^_^

I really hope not, can't think that so many Sram products would be failing under one roof! Probably just "hy sê sy sê" stories met 'n stertjie by. That would be terrifying if only one shop has seen those numbers fail. On the other hand, if it is just the one shop, maybe they should think of getting a new mechanic because their current one is obviously not doing something right.

I will put money on it that these were assembled wrong. Eagle was the 1st time SRAM started using these Washers where ONE is different to the rest. I bet you the LBS mechie did not notice this and just assemble as before....

If it is assembled incorrectly you will have a little gap here

That's only for GX/X01/XX1, apparently the NX uses a different system hence the weird looking washer.

My friend who broke his over the weekend hasn't taken it apart and it was a brand new bike.

So the washer issue cause the upper wheel to seize or drag and the screw comes out or gets damaged?

Seems to be the case. But it doesn’t explain what happened to the brand new NX as in the post above ????
