Garmin Device

My son saved up some money and bought himself a Garmin Edge 800 with HRM last year. The unit first started with not reconising the HR sensor, reset and repair did not solve the problem. Saturday morning his unit just died. He took it to the agents to look at the unit.

Received feedback today that the unit is unserviceable and also quoted him on a new Edge 820 device for R5692.00.

He is within two minds now that although the replacement price is very good he simply does not have that kind of cash right now and he is thinking about Edge 520 which might be somewhat cheaper.

Question is it worth while looking at the 520 as opposed to the 820?

I have read the reviews but would rather have the opinion of the real world feeling as opposed to the marketing hype.

Nothing wrong with the 520.  It does everything it's meant to do.  It's a more compact unit too.

Also look at the Edge 130 if cost is an issue.

520 works for me, have had one nearly 2 years without issue, some have had issues.  Does what it needs to do with regard to recording gps, HR, power, cadence.  I use for both outdoor and on the IDT.

Just beware that the 520 comes with its own reliability issues - just read a few threads on the hub

Might be a case of "Jumping from the frying pan into the fire"

Does he have the option to go 520+?

Very similar abilities to the 820, except for the touch screen

Cant recall the exact amount but when my Edge 800 packed up last year I did not pay nearly that amount for it to be replaced with an 820.

Does seem strange the payment amount. This week i paid Garmin R2245 upgrade fee when my 810 was diagnosed unserviceable. This was for an 820 unit.

My dads 820 was just replaced and it was 2500 if I am correct. But it might be that the 800 to 820 differ. AS he had a 820 and got a 820

I've had 3 Garmin 520 this year. All of them with communication errors. Now I'm upgrading to the 820. Not sure if I should look at another brand.

is he expected to fork out the whole amount, or do they discount the price based on warranty?  I had a fenix3 with a battery malfunction and it was replaced on the spot.  the new fenix's warranty was dated from the replacement date, not the original purchase date.

Upgraded from the 500 to the 520 few years back. Great unit. Does everything I expect from it. Had no issues with the 500, except having to plug in after every training session became a schlep.

Last year? Surely it is still under warranty? Has the 800 been discontinued that they want him to get a 820? Garmin themselves definitely  don't seem as keen to replace as Navworld did. Suppose that's why they split, or a reason at least.

I use the edge 130 paired with a 935. The 130 is perfect if not looking for topographic maps.
