Travelling in the rain

Hi All,

Not sure if this topic has been covered but when travelling around with your bikes in the rain, how does everybody protect/cover them?

Sometimes i travel as far as 200/300 km's for a weekend ride and i pick up rain along the way. I've noticed that the rain abuses my drive train seriously and when i stop, i have to wipe down everything and re-lube.

I've even tried a make shift bike cover but when you travel on the highway you get some serious drag and sometimes makes the car unstable.

I'm just curious to hear what everybody is using.

Have a great day guys!

Something called a bike sock. I have no idea if anyone sells them locally

My bikes are carried on the roof and stay pretty clean.

Depends on what car you drive as well.  If you drive something with a hatchback it is 10 times worse.  If have not had too much of an issue with a sedan.  I did however avoid dirt roads.

I drive an A3 sedan with a 2 bike platform rack. I guess the problem comes in when your bike stays in the rain for extended periods of time. There is no way to stop the rain from getting in anywhere. I like the sock idea but that also has limitations like how do you strap your wheels to the platform rack.

The problem is that i'm not worried about the bike staying clean but rather the water getting in everywhere.

Both of those look like they would cause some serious wind resistance

I think on a SUV it's not as bad because of the width of the vehicle and the fact that the boot generally goes down at a 90 degree angle but where you have a gap between the boot (sedan) and the bike, it creates massive resistance. I've almost lost a bike because of it.
