Any "leg loosener" rides in Durban on the Saturday, before heading off to Registration?

You are welcome to join us at East Coast Cycling Club (ECCC). We will be doing a relaxed leg spinner from Suncoast Casino parking lot to Breakers Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks and back, starting at 6am on the Saturday - about 35km.

Any advice on how to curb cramps on a race like this? Doing it for the first time and I sometimes get cramps on 55km MTB races

Be properly prepared (i.e. train for at least 100km, close to the intensity you will ride on the day) as fatigued muscles cramp, and muscle fatigue when they are overused and / or for longer periods than they are used to. But a bit too late for this now.

Make sure your bike is properly set up, in that your muscles work in unison, and not on their own, as this leads to fatigue and cramps. Also a bit too late now, muscles needs at least two weeks to get used to new position / manner of use.

Be properly hydrated on the day, but this does not start on the day, you need to drink sufficient fluids in the days leading up to the race.

As a last resort, drink supplements like Cramp Ease or similar, as it contains minerals that can delay the onset of fatigue.

Not an exhausted list, but some of the more obvious things.

Sad I'm missing this race. Have a fun and safe ride everyone. Look out for the Germiston Wheelers, they're travelling down from Alberton starting next Thursday!

So you not there to hurt the field after Botha again..lol

As mentioned above, quite late now to try to really do anything different. Training for the distance and intensity is key.

You can also try to Crampnot gels or Fitlab MSM Antilac supplements. They may help out.

But do a trial run with the gel to see if you body likes it or not.

I pop a CrampEase pill every 30mins during events, haven't had a single cramp while taking these whereas without them I have cramped a couple of times. Many similar products out there.

The best way to avoid cramps is to take it easy. If you can complete 55km mtb, you should be fine coming in before the cut off. This is a very scenic route, so chill up the climbs and enjoy it, especially since it is your first one. This will be the first one I am pushing it, the previous two I just chilled with friends, no cramps.

You have to train for that intensity and distance, no products will eliminate cramps but can aid an already oiled machine. Last year i suffered cramps like you wont believe, this year i have upped the training and starting to see the results. The trapnet race i did have a cramp moment as i stood up however i just sat down and worked through it and was able to stand and do the final sprint.

I agree with all the comments made; you need to train those cramps out of your system.

Pacing for a race is critical; I try to ensure that my normalised power in Zone 3; at this pace my legs don’t cramp. If I try to ride at FTP normalised power for a race, I will cramp.

Products like ‘crampnot’ help but not if the cramps are due to training issues.

I also try to balance the load amongst the muscle groups by standing when the elevation increases to a reasonable level and requires higher power output however I also try to avoid unnecessary power spikes early on- no point dropping sprint power to close gaps.
