Painting bike with Rustoleum peel coat rubber coating. Am I crazy?

Hi all

I have an old scratched up carrera road bike that I was thinking of painting up. Apparently if you paint your bike matt black it makes it faster  . I have seen many youtube videos of guys using Plasti dip and it looks quite good. I cant find plasti dip anywhere in Jozi but I have seen Rustoleum peel rubber coating which looks like it may be the same thing. Has anyone tried it?

I have use it on my shoes (Giro Empire) before. Looks great for a few rides but then starts peeling off, if you knick it. I have the nasty habit of uncliping by twisting my heel in so I end up having a spot on the inside of my right heel. This way, I give the shoes a new lease of live every few weeks/ months.

If I remember correctly though there is a note on the can which states that you should remove and redo the coating every 3 months (not sure why though)

I haven't tried it but I can't see why it wouldn't work, it just wouldn't be very scratch resistant. If the frame is an old steel classic Carrera then you need your head read, they're way too nice to turn into bombers.

Hahaha I definitely need my head read but not because of the bike. Its an aluminium hybrid converted to road and its not a Carrera like Pantani had, this is a Halfords version which is nowhere near the Italian bikes (as far as I know).

I am going to throw a coat on and see how it goes!

Please let us know how it goes, I have an itch to murder out my hardtail.

I will post pics after this weekend.

Use the normal rustoleum paint with primer and paint in one can , do 3 or 4 coats and be blown away by how good it looks and holds up even on an mtb

You reckon the normal paint with primer? I did see it at builders. Would you recommend sanding the bike down first or can I just go ahead and spray?

Plasti Dip works great. I've seen cars being done with the stuff.

Used it on my motorcycle as well as motorcycle helmet.

The nice thing about it is that you can't mess up the original paintwork. So I would suggest not to sand and just go plasti dip straight over original paintwork.

Also, the more coats you put on, the more resistant it becomes to "light" scratches ans scuffs.

Clean frame thoroughly first with a soapy wash and then a wipe down with petrol just before you spray. Try to spray in a dust free environment.

Then apply 5 to 10 thin coats allowing for drying time between coats as per instructions on can. You can really apply as many coats as you like.

Plasti Dip and Rust-Oleum Peel Coat is the same stuff. Used both and works the same.

Last time I checked Plasti and Rustoleum were both being sold at Builders Warehouse.

Awesome thanks! I'm going to have a bash at it this weekend.

Pics added! It came out quite nicely I think and initial testing has shown an increase of 50w of power:)

I'm wondering now if I should add a clear coat over it to offer a bit more protection.

Don't both clear coating... its not a normal coat of paint. Any damage in the coat tends to come from it peeling. Had some on my F800 GS, looked good but eventually started lifting off where my pants rubbed.

Kief. I reckon it's time for me to strip my hardtail and do the same.

How many cans did you need?

I used one can and did about 5 coats. I also did my helmet and the can is just about empty. I was going to buy two cans but I literally took the last matt black in stock at the Craighall Builders. I reckon if I find another can I'm going to get it for touch ups.
