So can one assume that the top 2 in each group should be going through?

To answer your question: yes the top two teams from each group goes through to the quarter finals.

Winner of group plays 2nd place team from other group.

In 2007 SA beat England 36-0 in the pool stage, England went on to win quarters, semi and face SA again in final.

Pool A looks like it could be an interesting pool to watch due to recent results. Pool B should see ourselves and the AB's go through. Pool C is a tough one to call as any two of England, France and Argentina can make it through. Pool D should really be Wales and Australia going through. We are probably going to get some interesting quarter final match ups.30baddee91462de2f4c51cd3933015a3.jpg

Yes indeed, should of added as it stands in that pic, it looks like the top 2 are most likely to go through.

Australia have an easy group.

Seeing as I quite like the rugby that Wales play I am sincerely hoping that they will be topping that group and not those darned Australians!

After the result Fiji got against the Maori All Blacks I wouldn’t write them off for an upset this time round.

The French had a horrible 6 nations campaign but they recently beat Scotland in a warm up game and they do lift themselves for the World Cup. That said I too feel that England and Argentina are going to be making it into the quarters.

Exactly. Only 3 teams have beaten NZ at world cups..... Australia twice... South Africa twice... And France twice. France have also narrowly lost 2 world cup finals to New Zealand.... Sure... Those wins and finals we years ago... But... The French lift themselves for world cups

I think the pool stages are going to be drawn out and rather uneventful.

Remember that disaster in brighton where we lost to Japan? Well we still topped the group.

even if we had lost to both Japan and Scotland we would still have gone through to the 1/4s and instead of facing Wales would have had australia.

My feeling is that there is a 95% chance that the teams with a black box will make the 1/4 finals. The winners of the scotland v japan and france v argentina will almost certainly join them.

Sure there will be some fun in the pools, but the gap is just too far still. (what makes it fun for me is that i will be watching both the NZ/SA and Aus/Fiji games in a pub somewhere in Fiji!)

Aphiwe Dyantyi :( , IF - big if, he hasn't done anything wrong, which I doubt (despite that very well written apology letter) its a real loss for the team.

They say he wouldn't have made it regardless, for lack of match fitness, but I think that's just an easy out for the media.

Will be interesting to see how France goes this World Cup. IIRC a bad 5/6 Nations in a RWC year normally meant a losing quarter final appearance. Not sure if it'll be the case this year. Argentina is quite capable of beating them on the day and have generally pushed the other RC sides really hard and gotten a couple of good wins in between losses. This match will be the best one to watch in Pool C. Personally I see it as being the same as a second round clash at a Football World Cup. Both teams have a point to prove and both want to win. It is going to be an epic clash whether as a defensive effort or an attacking one. But again my personal preference is Argentina.

What I am looking forward to is what the genius that is Robbie Owen will bring to his youtube channel

He and Mark of Two Cent Rugby are good fun. Robbie's analysis of matches is incredible and his dry wit makes it very entertaining. Mark's more of unbiased Kiwi view point with a bit of stats thrown in. Haven't really watched much of Off The Ball but they seem high quality as well.
